John McAfee, Gründer des gleichnamigen Sicherheitssoftware-Herstellers, ist am Mittwoch tot in seiner Gefängniszelle unweit von Barcelona aufgefunden worden. Zuvor hatte der Oberste Gerichtshof Spaniens grünes Licht für seine Auslieferung an die US-Justiz gegeben. Alles deute auf einen Suizid des 75-Jährigen hin, teilte das katalanische Justizministerium mit. Der britisch-amerikanische Unternehmer wurde im Oktober 2020 am Flughafen von Barcelona verhaftet, nachdem US-Bundesstaatsanwälte ihn beschuldigt hatten, Steuern hinterzogen und vorsätzlich keine Steuererklärungen abgegeben zu haben. In einer Auslieferungsanhörung behauptete McAfee, dass die Vorwürfe gegen ihn politisch motiviert seien. Zuletzt hatte er erfolglos versucht, Kandidat der Libertarian Party bei den US-Präsidentschaftswahlen 2020 zu werden; sein Hauptwahlkampfthema war die Förderung von Kryptowährungen. McAfee hätte noch Berufung gegen die Auslieferungsgenehmigung des Gerichts einlegen können.
