Why Fern From Nomadland Looks So Familiar

Journalist Jessica Bruder wrote
Nomadland: Surviving America in the Twenty-First Century in order to draw attention to the growing number of older Americans who began traipsing across the nation after the economic crash of the late 2000s. Their purpose: find seasonal jobs, stay a while, and then move on, seeing as much as they possibly can while making ends meet. Bruder's nonfiction work has since been adapted into the much more simply titled
.
Directed by Chloé Zhao, the film focuses on one of these older Americans: Fern, a woman out of a job when the manufacturing plant she's worked in for so long shuts down. To make matters worse, her husband passes away, leaving her with next to nothing. Her decision to become a nomad, then, is an easy one — a way for her to move on both physically and emotionally. If Fern actress Frances McDormand seems familiar to you, here's where you may have seen her before.

Frances McDormand in the 2014 HBO miniseries "Olive Kitteridge."Jojo Whilden
A lot of people are talking about Frances McDormand, now that her latest movie, “Nomadland,” is available to stream (it’s on Hulu). Her performance is sublime in the wistful film, as a guarded, restless woman on the road, and it may just bring her another Oscar, her third.
So: TV chiming in here with a reminder of one of her best performances, in the 2014 HBO miniseries “Olive Kitteridge,” available on HBO and HBO Max. The four-parter is one of the best TV adaptations I’ve seen, conveying the ordinary lives in Elizabeth Strout’s novel-in-stories with raw honesty and grace. Directed by Lisa Cholodenko and written by Jane Anderson, it doesn’t hit a single wrong note. It made me think a little bit of “The Last Picture Show,” as it reveals a cultural pocket — the fictional Crosby, Maine — where Main Street looks quaint, but where desolation holds on underneath like a barnacle.
