Armed crackdowns on student protesters evoke the Vietnam era

As colleges turn to police to suppress pro-Palestinian demonstrators, some are calling for the National Guard. Experts say history should be a warning. At Emory University in Atlanta on Thursday, police tased pro-Palestinian protesters and targeted them with rubber bullets. A clash between Boston law enforcement and Emerson College students turned so violent that city sanitation workers were spotted cleaning blood from the cobblestone of a campus alleyway.

Italian philosopher indicted for "neo-Hitlerite" accusation

A philosopher faces defamation charges after condemning the use of the term “ethnic replacement” by a government minister. An Italian academic is facing criminal defamation charges after describing a government minister’s espousal of a white supremacist conspiracy as “neo-Hitlerite.” Donatella Di Cesare, professor of theoretical philosophy at the Sapienza University of Rome, told Times Higher Education that the lawsuit against her, one of several brought recently by members of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s Brothers of Italy party, was a means of “intimidation,” warning of an “authoritarian stranglehold” suppressing public discourse.

Turning higher education into a race and universities into horses (apologies to horses)

Pets help students self-soothe at college

To help ease homesickness, some colleges have adopted pet-friendly policies for students living on- and off-campus. Moving off to college doesn’t mean you have to leave the family dog behind, at least at some institutions. Starting this fall, students at Warren Wilson College in North Carolina can bring dogs, cats, rabbits, birds and more into the residence halls. Administrators hope the new policy not only addresses student health and wellness concerns, but also helps recruit animal-loving learners.
