Labour Day 2021: A Quick History In The Philippines

In the Philippines, International Labour Day is remembered every first of May to mark the centuries-long struggle of the proletariat and honour their bravery for demanding better working conditions.
On 1 May 1903, the first Labour Day celebration in the country took place in Plaza Moriones, Tondo to Malacañang where thousands of labourers gathered by the
Union Obrera Democratica de Filipinas marched and protested independence against American capitalism and imperialism.
The event, which history considers as one of the first protests in the streets of Manila, had more than 100,000 attendees who made their stand against exploitation.

International Labour Day is the only international holiday created and proclaimed directly by the working sector. It stemmed from mass actions worldwide that demanded safe working schemes, eight-hour labour, and better wages.

April 27 declared a special working day; 2021 as 'Year of Filipino Pre-Colonial Ancestors'

April 22, 2021
MALACANANG has declared April 27, 2021 as a special working day in the country and named 2021 as the "Year of Filipino Pre-Colonial Ancestors."
The declaration was made through Proclamation 1128, which was signed by Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea and President Rodrigo Duterte on April 8 but was released only on April 17.
Duterte said April 27, 2021 marks the quincentennial of the victory of Lapu-Lapu in the Battle of Mactan, while the period between March 16 and October 28, 2021 is the 500th anniversary of the Philippines' participation in the first circumnavigation of the world.
"Whereas, the commemoration of these milestones in our rich history shall strengthen our national pride, and serve as a platform to educate our fellowmen and the whole world of the noble deeds and ideals of our ancestors," Proclamation 1128 stated.
