15 Antique coastal towns ideal for salt production

SALT. Salt sold in a local market in Antique province. Petinglay) SAN JOSE DE BUENAVISTA, Antique - Fifteen of Antique's 18 municipalities have been pinpointed as ideal sites for salt production. Antique Provincial Board Member Rony Molina, who sponsored a resolution to revive the salt production industry in the province, said in an interview Wednesday that the 15 municipalities situated along the sea coast are ideal sites for salt production where residents used to engage in salt-making. "Salt production, like in the coastal barangays of San Jose de Buenavista, need to be revived so that we could increase our production and help solve the country's sad state," Molina said. He said in his resolution that "it is quite ironic for the Philippines to import salt, considering that the Philippines has the fifth longest shoreline in the world." Identified as ideal for salt production are the coastal towns of Anini-y, Belison, Bugasong, Barbaza, Caluya, Culasi, Hamtic, Laua-an, Libertad, Pandan, Patnongon, San Jose de Buenavista, Sebaste, Tibiao, and Tobias Fornier. "With the recent development and focus on the salt industry, Antique should plan ahead and be among the first province in the country to use and be the solution to the call for the revitalization of the salt industry," Molina said in the resolution. Office of the Provincial Agriculture senior aqua-culturist Allette Gayatin, in a separate interview, urged the local government units of the 15 coastal municipalities in the province to provide salt-making sites and inputs for salt-makers to increase their production. Based on their record, the province has produced 11.6 metric tons of salt during the January to June peak season last year from the salt-producing towns of Tibiao, Belison, and Patnongon, she said. Edgar Denosta) SAN JOSE DE BUENAVISTA, Antique - Coconut farmers in the town of Hamtic received a total of PHP207,500 incentive under the cash-for-work program of the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) on Wednesday. Each of the 166 coconut farmers received PHP1,250 for the 50 coconut seedlings that they planted four to six years ago and are now in their fruit-bearing stage. "The cash-for-work is a form of incentive for farmers that have now fruit-bearing trees," Dionelo Jamora-Ongga, PCA Antique senior agriculturist, said in an interview on Thursday. The cash-for-work is still part of the "Yolanda" Rehabilitation and Recovery Program as an incentive to farmers who devoted their farms to coconut planting. Typhoon Yolanda hit the province in November 2013 but the incentive was released when the coconuts were now fruit-bearing. In March, fertilizers were distributed in Hamtic and 12 other towns of the province where there are plantations of coconut trees. Around 4,884 bags of multi-nutrient fertilizers were distributed in Anini-y, Barbaza, Bugasong, Caluya, Laua-an, Libertad, Pandan, Patnongon, San Remigio, Sebaste, Tobias Fornier, and Sibalom. Antique has around 12,000 coconut farmers. (PNA) }

Prov'l board to get public pulse on move to divide Antique

SESSION. Antique Provincial Board Member Karmila Rose Dimamay (standing) speaks during the provincial board regular session Thursday (Sept. 8, 2022). Dimamay said they decided to refer a resolution urging to divide Antique province into two districts to the committee on laws, ordinances, and good governance to first get the public opinion.(PNA photo by Annabel Consuelo J. Petinglay) SAN JOSE DE BUENAVISTA, Antique - The Antique Provincial Board will be holding public consultation meetings to get feedback on the proposed resolution to divide the province into two legislative districts. The Board during its regular session on Thursday decided that the en banc resolution calling legislators from Antique to enact the apportionment of the province of Antique into two congressional districts be referred to the committee on laws, ordinances, and good governance for proper consultation before its approval. The proposed resolution was supposed to be addressed to Senate President Pro-Tempore Loren Legarda, Antique Lone District Rep. Antonio Agapito Legarda and Partylist Rep. Felimon Espares of the Coop-NATCCO, who is also from this province. "We decided that we need to get the opinion of the various stakeholders on the committee level before we decide on the plenary so that we would still know what are the other things to be done or considered," said Board Member Karmila Rose Dimamay in an interview. The committee hearing that will be conducted next week will be participated by various sectors in the province, with Senator Legarda, Representatives Legarda and Espares, Governor Rhodora Cadiao and mayors in the province are expected to attend, for them to share their positions on the move. Board Member Jessielito Pio Sumande, in a separate interview, said the province's congressional development fund of PHP350 million per district will be doubled if there are two districts. "Dividing Antique into two districts is already a longtime dream of the people," he said. Sangguniang Kabataan Federation and provincial board ex-officio member Mark Canja said that it would be advantageous if there will be two districts considering that the students from the north no longer have to travel to San Jose de Buenavista for their official transactions like to follow up on their scholarships with the congressional office. "Our fresh graduates living in the north would have easy access to the congressional office put up in the north and even have opportunity to apply for work there," he said. He said that the congressman in the north could also focus on delivering projects for the municipalities in the northern towns. The towns of Anini-y, Tobias Fornier, Hamtic, San Jose de Buenavista, Sibalom, San Remigio, Belison, and Valderrama will be under the south district while municipalities of Patnongon, Barbaza, Bugasong, Caluya, Culasi, Laua-an, Libertad, Pandan, Sebaste, and Tibiao will be with the north district should the proposed two districts will be realized. Move to divide Antique into 2 legislative districts pushed

DIVIDE ANTIQUE. The Antique Provincial Board during its regular session on July 14, 2022. Antique Board Member Karmila Rose Dimamay said on Wednesday (Sept. 7, 2022) they will pass an en banc resolution on Sept. 8 for the province to be divided into two districts.(PNA file photo by Annabel Consuelo J. Petinglay) ILOILO CITY - The Antique Provincial Board will try for the third time to call for the province to be divided into two districts with the expected approval of a resolution during its regular session on Thursday. The resolution will be addressed to Senator Loren Legarda, Antique Lone District Rep. Antonio Agapito "AA" Legarda, and Coop-NATCCO (Cooperative-National Confederation of Cooperatives) party-list Rep. Felimon Espares, who is also from Antique, said Board Member Karmila Rose Dimamay in an interview on Wednesday. "Through the en banc resolution, we hope we could express our strong sentiment for Antique to already be divided into two districts," Dimamay said. She added that it would be the third time the provincial board will pass the resolution for the province to be divided into two districts. The first two were passed by the previous provincial boards. Antique Governor Rhodora J. Cadiao said on Tuesday that she was informed of the ongoing signature campaign urging Rep. Legarda to sponsor a bill for the province to be split into two districts. "The signature campaign for the division of the province could be beneficial to the people considering that there will be two congressmen who will be attending to their needs," Cadiao said. The signature campaign spearheaded by the Liga ng mga Barangay is an independent move from that of the provincial board. Cadiao added that the province of Antique has an elongated shape that the people in the northern towns could hardly access the services of the offices of the governor and congressman located in the capital town of San Jose de Buenavista located in the south. Should the division pushes through, the municipalities of Anini-y, Tobias Fornier, Hamtic, San Jose de Buenavista, Sibalom, San Remigio, Belison and Valderrama will be under the south district while the towns of Patnongon, Barbaza, Bugasong, Caluya, Culasi, Laua-an, Libertad, Pandan, Sebaste and Tibiao will belong to the north district. DOLE special employment program hires 850 Antiqueno students

EMPLOYMENT. Students who were hired through the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Special Program for the Employment of Students (SPES) and assigned to the local government unit of Valderrama. Donnabelle Baldonado, DOLE Antique information officer, said the SPES is being implemented in the province with 850 student beneficiaries.(Photo courtesy of DOLE Antique) SAN JOSE DE BUENAVISTA, Antique - A total of 850 Antiqueno students have been hired under the Special Program for the Employment of Students (SPES) of the labor department. Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Antique provincial office information officer Donnabelle Baldonado said on Wednesday the program provides poor but deserving students the opportunity to work and earn while at the same time acquiring knowledge and developing their skills. "There are local government units (LGUs), schools, and private establishments that have partnered with DOLE for the SPES implementation," Baldonado said in an interview. She added that the first SPES implementation was in partnership with a private school here, the Advance Central College (ACC), where 50 students were deployed from April 25 to June 3, doing clerical work and other tasks assigned to them for 20 days. Since the implementation was done before the new minimum wage rate took effect, they were paid based on the previous rate of PHP395 a day. DOLE shouldered 40 percent of the wage and 60 percent is paid by the employer. The program has an ongoing partnership with the towns of Bugasong, Culasi, Hamtic, Laua-an, Pandan, and Valderrama. It will soon be implemented in the municipalities of Anini-y, Barbaza, Belison, Libertad, Patnongon, San Jose de Buenavista, San Remigio, Sebaste, Sibalom, Tibiao, and Tobias Fornier. Aside from local government units, other partners that have adopted the program are the University of Antique (UA) main campus in Sibalom, Antique Electric Cooperative (Anteco), Barbaza Multi-Purpose Cooperative, and the Antique provincial government. The program is expected to start anytime this June until August for the rest of the LGUs and other implementing partners. Baldonado said the number of students employed through SPES varies depending on the available fund of their partner LGUs, schools, and establishments. (PNA) }
