‘The government seemed much keener on ensuring credit for what it was doing rather than ensuring that pandemics do not spread in India’, says the Nobel laureate
India's "confused" government focused on taking credit for its actions, rather than working to restrict the spread of COVID-19, resulting in schizophrenia that led to massive troubles, Nobel laureate Amartya Sen has said.

COVID-19 vaccine: Health Ministry finalises arrangements with Hyderabad firm for 30 crore doses


For this purpose, the Ministry of Health would be making an advance payment of ₹1,500 crore.
The vaccine of Biological-E was currently undergoing Phase-3 clinical trial after it showed promising results in Phase 1 and 2 clinical trials. The RBD protein sub-unit vaccine is likely to be available in the next few months.
“The proposal of M/s Biological-E was examined and recommended for approval after due diligence by National Expert Group on Vaccine Administration for COVID-19 (NEGVAC),” the Ministry said.
It added that the arrangement with the manufacturer is part of the wider endeavour of the government to encourage indigenous vaccine makers by providing them support in Research & Development and also financial support.

Top court adjourns hearing in matter to May 31
The Supreme Court on Friday orally advised a petitioner, who wants the CBSE/ICSE Board exams to be cancelled due to the COVID-19 health crisis, to remain optimistic, while saying that the government may resolve the issue by June 1.
A Special Bench of Justices A.M. Khanwilkar and Dinesh Maheshwari adjourned the hearing of the case to May 31 on learning that the advance copies of the petition were not sent to them. The court said the CBSE, the ICSE and the Centre should be represented in the hearing.

Conveyed appreciation for U.S. solidarity in addressing the Covid challenge, the Minister says.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has had a hectic day and a half in Washington DC, where he met government officials, including National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan and the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) ambassador Katherine Tai, lawmakers, and the private sector.
Mr. Jaishankar, who is on his first visit to the U.S. during the Biden administration, met with Mr. Sullivan on Thursday. Both sides indicated that there was a discussion on regional (Indo-Pacific) or global issues, with Mr Jaishankar specifying, via a tweet, that Afghanistan came up.
