BALI: Indonesia said Friday it will salvage a submarine that sank off the coast of Bali, as grieving relatives paid their respects to the dozens of crew killed in the disaster.
Authorities had yet to confirm if they would try to haul up the KRI Nanggala 402 from the seafloor, after it was spotted cracked in three pieces. The navy on Friday said it was waiting on the arrival of two ships, including a vessel sent by China, that are equipped to handle deep-sea salvage operations.

Indonesia Promotes Crew of Missing Submarine Who Are Presumed Dead

After a days-long search, Indonesian officials over the weekend declared the submarine lost and said everyone on board was presumed dead. On Monday, the country honored the 53 with posthumous promotion.
"For the dedication and sacrifice of these 53 soldiers, the state will give awards for promotion to one level higher and a sign of honor for the Bintang Jalasena," President Joko Widodo wrote in a tweet.

Indonesia Submarine: Missing Vessel Presumed 'Sunk' After Debris Found

The submarine is now presumed to be 'sunk', Indonesia's Navy Chief of Staff said.
Hopes of rescuing the 53 crew members who were on board have now faded.
Items have been discovered from the missing Indonesian submarine, Indonesia's Navy Chief of Staff Admiral Yudo Margono said on Saturday.
Rescuers found a grease bottle, parts of a torpedo, and prayer rugs from the submarine, the Associated Press reported.
"With the authentic evidence we found believed to be from the submarine, we have now moved from the 'sub miss' phase to 'sub sunk,'" Margon said during a press conference.
Hopes have now faded of rescuing the 53 crew members who were on board the submarine.

Indonesia says all on board dead after submarine sinks and cracks open

Indonesia’s navy declared its missing submarine had sunk and cracked open, killing 53 crew members aboard, after finding items from the vessel over the past two days.
Military chief Hadi Tjahjanto said the presence of an oil slick as well as debris near the site where the submarine’s last dive on Wednesday off the island of Bali were clear proof the KRI Nanggala 402 sank.
Indonesia earlier considered the vessel to be only missing.
Navy Chief Yudo Margono told a press conference in Bali: “If it’s an explosion, it will be in pieces.
“The cracks happened gradually in some parts when it went down from 300 metres to 400 metres to 500 metres … If there was an explosion, it would be heard by the sonar.”

The Indonesian navy says its missing submarine is presumed sunk. Hundreds of sailors from around the world have been lost to submarine disasters.

Missing Indonesian submarine may have sunk too deep to reach

Indonesian navy ships are searching for a submarine that is likely to have sunk too deep to retrieve, making survival chances for the 53 people on board slim.
The diesel-powered KRI Nanggala 402 was participating in a training exercise on Wednesday when it missed a scheduled reporting call.
Officials reported an oil slick and the smell of diesel near the starting position of its last dive, about 60 miles north of the resort island of Bali, although there has been no clear evidence they are linked to the submarine.
The navy said it believes the submarine sank to a depth of 2,000-2,300ft — much deeper than its collapse depth, estimated at 656ft by a firm that refitted the vessel in 2009-12.
