Dual degrees shape research interests for IST assistant professor

Silverman, who joined the College of Information Sciences and Technology last year as an assistant professor with a focus in biomedical statistics, made global headlines last summer for his study suggesting that 80% of U.S. COVID-19 cases went undetected in March 2020.
He and his research team analyzed data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on the number of patients who sought medical care for influenza-like illnesses during that time span. That number, said Silverman, was far in excess over what was reported in previous years. By applying probabilistic models that Silverman had developed for the analysis of nonlinear time-series data, they found evidence that this excess influenza-like illness was actually caused by the novel coronavirus largely going undiagnosed due to limited testing capacity at the start of the pandemic. ....

Penn State announces 'expanded' artificial intelligence initiative

Penn State announced Friday an expanded initiative in the field of artificial intelligence titled AI Hub.
AI Hub will utilize the university s resources in artificial intelligence to advance Penn State s position in AI innovations, according to a statement from the university. The new initiative will also use machine learning to solve the hardest challenges, and to create unique applications of AI and ML in unforeseen areas, according to the statement.
Lora Weiss, senior vice president for research, announced the new initiative and outlined some of its goals.
Penn State is poised to take AI to new levels where researchers are already creating new knowledge and discoveries with AI, from tackling climate change to improving health outcomes to developing new materials, Weiss said in the statement. ....

Perceptions of barriers may keep budding entrepreneurs from building businesses

According to the researchers, who report their findings in a recent issue of Studies in Educational Evaluation, lessons can be designed so that they not only teach entrepreneurial skills, but also show that barriers may not be as daunting as the students believe.
“For example, take a simple step, like registering a business,” said Konak. “One lesson we use is to have the students go to a government website and search for company names and whether the business they are visualizing is registered. Then, the students learn the steps of what it takes to register a business in Pennsylvania. This is a very simple assignment, but I think it helps them remove a barrier.” ....
