Western NC county won't talk about moving Confederate monument, even at request of city where it's located

CHRISSY MURPHY
Staff Writer
In a letter sent to Burke County Commissioners on Thursday, the Morganton City Council asked for the board to facilitate a discussion about the Confederate monument that sits on the historic courthouse square.
But commissioners seemed to nix the idea of a discussion before having the letter in their hands.
The letter, which the council directed city staff to send in a unanimous motion at its meeting Monday night, cites concerns over elevated tensions surrounding the statue in the last year.
“The Commissioners have no doubt heard voices on both sides of this issue, as well as those calling for compromise or just for calm, and the city has also heard from all sides,” the council wrote in the letter. “Emotions and feelings run deep on both sides. We are also well aware of the constraints placed by state statute on any local action concerning this monument.” ....

CAL THOMAS: Lost liberties and the Biden administration

If one can say the pandemic has had any positive side effect, it has been to help us focus on what the loss of liberties looks like. Such losses do not occur immediately but erode over time as people become increasingly comfortable with government claiming to know what is best for us.
The Biden administration is proceeding on a downward spiral that has ended in lost liberties in nations of the past by seizing increasing amounts of power for itself through a slew of executive orders, without the consent of the people, or Congress.
When announcing his gun control executive orders last week, President Biden referenced the Second Amendment and the right to keep and bear arms. He claimed his orders do not infringe on that right, but added, No amendment is absolute. That is concerning. ....

April 12 - Huntertown utilities board approves water and sewer applications, one with conditions

The Huntertown Utility Service Board held its monthly meeting April 5 and heard details about a few different water and sewer line applications.
The first one discussed was for a single-family home at 1004 Hathaway Road on behalf of Lancia Homes.
Town Engineer Derek Frederickson spoke on the applications.
“They are looking for just a single-property service,” Frederickson said. “Their intention is to go across the road through the common area in Ravenswood over to a sanitary manhole for a connection. I believe the water line is right there along the property.”
He said this application was straightforward. Frederickson wanted to bring this application before the board because he thinks the town’s long-term plan is to run a force mainline down Hathaway Road, and this project would include this property. This would take the sewer lines to the Copper Creek subdivision side of the road instead. ....
