Bill to reduce Dem participation on Management Council nears passage

CHEYENNE — After four years of attempts, state lawmakers are close to passing legislation that would reduce Democratic representation on the powerful and traditionally nonpartisan legislative committee that sets the agendas, rules and protocols for the entire body.
Sponsored by Rep. Dan Laursen, R-Powell, House Bill 36 – Management council membership would reduce the overall number of positions on the Legislature’s Management Council and effectively reduce the proportion of minority-party lawmakers that must be included by making several of the seats available to “at-large” candidates.
If passed into law, the bill would immediately impact the makeup of the Management Council, a leadership committee that designates the legislative agenda, disciplines members and sets rules and regulations for the entire Legislature. ....

It's official: Tennessee has a history of declaring favorites

Lawmakers in the Tennessee House of Representatives voted last week to designate the Bible as the state’s official book.
If approved by the state Senate and signed by Gov. Bill Lee, the holy scriptures would join an assortment of plants, insects and other creatures deemed an “official” something in Tennessee.
That includes the raccoon, which is the official wild animal in Tennessee. The wily raccoon is in the same company as the bobwhite quail, which is the state’s game bird.
Tennessee’s official state tree is the tulip popular. Its state sport fish is the smallmouth bass.
The tomato is Tennessee’s official state fruit, and the iris is its sanctioned cultivated flower. ....

General Assembly to consider Gov. Ralph Northam's proposals to alter bills, budget

The Virginia General Assembly is reconvening Wednesday to take up Gov. Ralph Northam’s recommended changes to legislation, with much of the attention being paid to him urging lawmakers to speed up legalizing simple possession of marijuana.
The General Assembly passed legislation to make it lawful for an adult to possess up to an ounce of marijuana in 2024, when commercial sales begin, but the chances of the legislature passing Northam’s amendment to accelerate the timeline look good.
House Speaker Eileen Filler-Corn, D-Fairfax, and Del. Lamont Bagby, D-Henrico, the chairman of the Virginia Legislative Black Caucus, have both endorsed what Northam wants to do. Del. Sam Rasoul, D-Roanoke, said while he wished Northam had made some other changes, particularly investing more tax revenue from sales to a fund aimed at communities historically over-policed for marijuana-related crimes, he said he believes there’s a consensus. Rasoul was one of several Democrats who ....
