Through their actions, Mary Chambers, Sara Nathan, Giorgina Saffi, Julia Salis Schwabe, and Jessie White Mario transcended the boundaries of acceptable behavior for middle-class women and participated in the broader female emancipation movement. By drawing attention to their activities, this book reveals how nineteenth-century female activists achieved their most revolutionary goals by using conservative, domestic, or anti-Catholic language. Adding to the growing understanding of the Italian Risorgimento as a transnational phenomenon, it also shows how non-Catholic and non-Italian women participated in the creation and development of the Italian state. Finally, the book argues for the continuing importance of religion in both politics and philanthropy throughout the nineteenth century."
Composer and pianist Frederic Rzewski is dead at 83 Frederic Rzewski in 2011 (Photo credit–Christian Mondrup) Rzewski, who taught at the Royal Academy of Music in Liège, Belgium from 1977 until his death, is best known for his set of variations for solo piano, Be Defeated, based on a protest song, written by Chilean composer Sergio Ortega, that became inseparable from the resistance of the working class to the coup that overthrew Salvador Allende and installed fascist dictator Augusto Pinochet in 1973. The massive set of 36 variations, spanning nearly an hour in length, was premiered by and created for the pianist Ursula Oppens in 1976, at a series of concerts in Washington D.C. to mark the bicentennial of the United States. It was often performed by Rzewski himself, and a 2005 recital by him was reviewed in the WSWS.

THE PRODUCTIONS I caught in Wales before lockdown were exceptional, with The Beauty Parade a stunning and deeply moving theatrical account of the women sent to occupied France to help the Resistance and, in Winston Churchill’s phrase, “set Europe ablaze.” Kaite O’Reilly wrote and co-directed this inspirational piece of theatre which has a cast of just three women bringing to life the secret operation — codenamed The Beauty Parade — through song, music, acting and a unique blend of mime and sign language. It is a compelling collaboration between deaf and hearing artists which tells the story of a little-known part of the British war effort against fascism — saving the 1958 movie Carve Her Name with Pride.
