CEO Pay Surges In 2020 Despite Pandemic Suffering
Compensation jumped, even for the chief executive of a pandemic-battered cruise line, according to a Wall Street Journal analysis.
As many Americans struggled during the COVID-19 pandemic, median pay for CEOs at more than 300 of the nation’s largest public companies zoomed to $13.7 million, up from $12.8 million a year earlier, according to a Wall Street Journal analysis.
CEO compensation kept climbing, even in industries laid low by the pandemic and at companies where chief executives voluntarily gave up some of their salaries, according to the Journal, which analyzed data for S&P 500 companies via research firm MyLogIQ.

Sumner Academy class reacts to photo of rioter with confederate flag in front of abolitionist's portrait

Updated: 5:51 PM CST Jan 12, 2021
During the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, photographers captured a man carrying a confederate flag as he passed a portrait of Massachusetts senator Charles Sumner. Sumner was beaten in the capitol after his “Crime Against Kansas” speech which argued for the admission of Kansas to the union as a free state. At Sumner Academy of Arts and Sciences in Kansas City, Kansas, teachers are talking with students about the riot while drawing lessons from the school’s namesake.“It s really unfortunate, but it s also very ironic. And it also gives us an opportunity to have a discussion on the polar opposites that we see in that picture,” said Jamelle Brown, Debate and Forensics teacher at Sumner Academy. “Charles Sumner was all about bringing people together. He was one who was not looked upon very wisely from some of the people in his party, because he was so radical in the whole idea that we do not need slavery. And so we need to make sure students understand that history and understand, okay, now we see what happened last Wednesday, what can we what can you do to fix what s going on right now in America? How can we bring people together?”JaKayla Brown is a Junior at Sumner Academy. She said the day after the riot, her teachers gave students time to talk and express their feelings.“There was a lot of ‘Whys, What was the point? What is being done about that? Why did things happen the way that it happened?’ A lot of questions I don t think anybody really has answers to.”JaKayla says Sumner’s legacy serves as an example for students. “For us to have a picture of a Confederate flag in front of the work that he did, literally risking his life to stand up for what he believed in. I think that s a lot for us to say, if he could have done it, then we can definitely still do it now.”She urges adults to have honest conversations with their children about what is happening.“Just be honest with them, not to sugarcoat anything, because as long as we re still running away from the solution or acting like the problem isn t there, nothing will be done, nothing will be changed and it s up to us to change something.”Among the lessons they learn as part of the debate team is that words matter. “The power of one s voice is so magnificent and it gives you that opportunity to use a platform,” said Jamelle Brown, “Whatever that platform may be, if it s being a teacher in front of students, if it s being a student at a competition, using my platform, with my voice to advocate for positive real world change. That s what Charles Sumner was about and that s what we at Sumner Academy want to continue. We know that from Sumner High School, that legacy was there, we want to continue that legacy.”Sumner Academy for Arts and Science emerged after Sumner High School closed and students were reassigned as part of court-ordered desegregation in 1978. From 1934 to the 1950s, African American students from across the metro were bussed to Sumner High school. The school is now a magnet school named to the National Register of Historic Places and the Register of Historic Kansas Places.
