[laughter] youre at the Wilson Center and today is another in our books at wilson series featuring the latest book by the remarkable james reston who is a Wilson Center global fellow. The topic of the book deals with a contentious period in the history of the vietnam war, and the book itself deals with the contentious debate over how to mark that war and the american role and sacrifice during that period. That was fraught with politics and contention over the appropriate artistic expression to memorialize that dramatic period in American History. Wrote one of our newsletters and it suddenly occurred to me that for people ,ow who are our age then vietnam is to them, chronologically, what world war i was for us. But not know about you, world war i did not weigh heavily on my imagination at all. The question is, why is vietnam still weighing on our imaginations . It is not so hard to understand. Faults of the ken did touch on it the fact that it is an unresolved question in this society. Hopefully when we have that discussion later this afternoon ,e will talk about the ways intentionally or not, it has opened the door for far more discussion. Not so much the subject matter per se but why writing matters. And we both feel, as im sure you do, that writing matters quite a bit. How it matters, is really a task for the writer to come to terms with. How are you going to get people to read, to turn the page, to be as enthralled with your subject as you are. And you know mr. Robert caro is working on he has a master of the enthralled. We thought we are talking a little bit about that. Recently and hope you saw this, there was recently a interview with bob and one of the things i thought was so wonderful about this was bob talking about certain working methods.
