Things To Do: Air Supply, Arena Theatre, May 1, 2021

Graham Russell knows a thing or two about planting a seed, nurturing it and watching it grow into a lush source of sustenance. Whether it’s literally growing the food he eats or producing a bumper crop of music for the world’s nourishment, he’s got a green thumb.
Russell is guitarist, vocalist and songwriter for Air Supply, half of the iconic pop/rock duo, along with lead vocalist Russell Hitchcock. The band is headed to Houston for a live show May 1 at Arena Theatre, making Air Supply one of the first big name acts to perform for an actual, live-in-attendance audience here since COVID struck. The Houston date is one of the first on a tour which is slated to keep the group on the road through October.

James Steinman, composer, lyricist, playwright and producer, passed away April 19.

You may not know him by name, but I’m certain you know his lyrics, especially if you’ve been at a karaoke bar.
James Steinman, American composer, lyricist, playwright and record producer, passed away April 19 at age 73.
Dropping just a few of the names of some of his most iconic songs will show the significant his songwriting: “Two Out Of Three Ain’t Bad,” “Paradise By The Dashboard Light” and “I’d Do Anything For Love (But I Won’t Do that.)” Of course, you know these songs as hits by Meat Loaf.
Steinman was a major force behind the success of Meat Loaf in the mid-1970s. He had an astounding ability to put together lyrics that were clever, edgy and melodramatic. Steinman produced Meat Loaf’s iconic “Bat Out Of Hell.” one of the best-selling albums of all time.

Meat Loaf pays homage to friend Jim Steinman, says late songwriter was "the centerpiece to my life"

Jim Steinman, who died April 19 at age 73 after a long illness.
“Since I met Jim, he has been the centerpiece to my life,” Meat Loaf told the magazine. “And I was always the centerpiece of his. Jim couldn’t do anything or go anywhere that I wasn’t with him or I wasn’t there.”
During the conversations, Meat Loaf recalled meeting Steinman when he auditioned for a 1973 off-Broadway musical Jim co-wrote.  He also discussed their close bond as collaborators, their perseverance in making
Bat Out of a Hell and getting it released, the rift in and eventual mending of their partnership, and more.

1969 - Walter Carlos's album Switched-On Bach, notable for being the first successful album to remix classical music compositions on the newly-invented Moog synthesizer, reaches #10 on the chart. The popularity of the album is the commercial breakthrough for Moog synthesizers, which go on to be part of the soundtrack in the films Tron, The Shining, and A Clockwork Orange. This in part brings synthesized music to mainstream popularity, paving the way for disco (especially the 'hi-NRG' style) in the '70s.
1977 - New York's legendary disco and party central, Studio 54, opened up for business. Studio 54 was the epicenter of 70s hedonism--a place that not only redefined the nightclub, but also came to symbolize an entire era.

Meat Loaf fears he won't make it to the end of 2021 following the loss of his longtime rock collaborator
Jim Steinman because they "belonged heart and soul" to one another.
The hitmaker and producer passed away from kidney failure on Monday (19Apr21), aged 73, and after initially paying a brief tribute to his "brother Jimmy" online, Meat Loaf has poured out his emotions in a phone interview with Rolling Stone, which spanned two days as the star struggled to come to terms with the loss.

The sole subject of his study:
Pat Metheny. The two guitarists are mutual admirers, and Pat set John up with his lead sheets to facilitate his arrangement of the complex Metheny pieces to a seven-string classical guitar boil down. The result is an intimate and introspective lockdown-generated deep study of Metheny songs like "James," "Last Train Home," and "Phase Dance." It also kept John busy during pandemic isolation in his Hudson Valley retreat, and eased the sorrow of a profound loss: both of his parents were claimed by Covid, within a week of each other, just about a year ago.

Crikey Weekender

Hypocrisy, insincerity and bigotry: not exactly light topics to kick off your weekend, but they’re words that describe how this week went down.
Bernard Keane covered how Prime Minister Scott Morrison tried to distract us all from the dying planet with a dig at “inner-city wine bar elites” (perhaps forgetting there’s a wine bar underneath his own electorate office). The Coalition admitted coal is killing the planet but denied the government had any duty of care for those affected, while Morrison’s campaign for extra funding for fossil fuel power and carbon capture was eaten up by the media.

Aw, no, Jim Steinman and Les McKeown gone in the same week! Steinman, 73, composer extraordinaire of Meat Loaf’s
Bat Out
of Hell, had deep roots in musical theatre and the dark blood of rock’n’roll bombast squirting through his veins. McKeown, 65, singer with 1970s phenomenon the Bay City Rollers, was the strutting, half-mast trousered tartan keeper of the true teen spirit.
