Though Gainesville's skyline grows, high-rises not routinely inspected for safety

Freeland said despite the lack of routine inspections, he believes local high-rises are safe.
Inspections on local buildings are complaint-driven, he said, and can occur when someone reports cracks or other structural concerns.
The inspections also take place during major renovations, such as a roof replacement, Freeland said.
Also, fire inspectors who see possible structural problems when doing regular inspections can also report them, Freeland said.
Another issue in South Florida that isn't a factor here is ocean salt, which can penetrate structures and begin rusting steel components, in particular rebar that may be improperly protected.
Even though the exact cause of the partial collapse of the 12-story condo building in Surfside is not yet known, numerous media reports have pointed to cracking concrete and other possible structural issues in the 40-year-old building.

Exploring and manipulating the behavior of polar vortices in materials may lead to new technology for faster data transfer and storage.
Our high-speed, high-bandwidth world constantly requires new ways to process and store information. Semiconductors and magnetic materials have made up the bulk of data storage devices for decades. In recent years, however, researchers and engineers have turned to ferroelectric materials, a type of crystal that can be manipulated with electricity.
In 2016, the study of ferroelectrics got more interesting with the discovery of polar vortices – essentially spiral-shaped grouping of atoms – within the structure of the material. Now a team of researchers led by the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Argonne National Laboratory has uncovered new insights into the behavior of these vortices, insights that may be the first step toward using them for fast, versatile data processing and storage. The team, which also includes researchers from DOE’s SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, published their results today in Nature.

The pandemic has caused another business casualty in Richmond.
Jackson & James Men’s Clothing Store in Scott’s Addition announced Wednesday that it plans to permanently close its storefront at 3200 Rockbridge St. in late February. The 1,800-square-foot store opened in 2017 on the ground floor of the $33 million redevelopment of the former Symbol Mattress factory.
Jackson & James co-owner Mike Anderson said the disruptions to the economy and everyday life dealt by the coronavirus pandemic had made it untenable to continue.

Belleville Street, largely left untouched during the early days of the Scott’s Addition real estate boom, continues to now be one of the neighborhood’s busiest strips for new development.
The latest sign of its momentum will soon take shape at 1508 Belleville St., where Thalhimer Realty Partners and property owner John Freeland are planning a six-story, 126-unit apartment building.
Last week TRP and Freeland filed an application for a special use permit, something TRP Principal Jason Guillot said they need in order to build six stories high. The property’s current B-7 zoning allows for up to five stories.
