Boston: The use of the term “obese” in the press should be updated to reflect that people today are living “with obesity.” In 2021, there were more than 40,000 mentions of the term “obese” in the news.
Brooklyn: Re Harry Siegel’s Jan. 30 column, ”The short game, the long game and Eric Adams”: With a new mayor and governor poised to have a better relationship than their predecessors, now is the best chance to address New York’s greatest challenges: a surge in crime, rising homelessness and the desperate need for an inclusive recovery from the pandemic.
Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.: Re “Adams: This is why we must get tough vs. guns” (April 23): Eric, you and I, as former street police officers, know that the battle against gun violence is won and lost out on the streets. I’ve now read that President Biden is going to try to do something about gun violence.
West Caldwell, N.J.: I’ve lived in the greater New York City area for 40 years and up until last March, served the city as a yellow cab driver full-time for the last eight of them. I’ve been watching this year’s mayoral race closely as nearly every quality of life issue has gone downhill. I was hoping that “Ed, Dave, Rudy, Mike, Bill and Me” (op-ed, Feb. 28) would give me better insight into many of the frontrunners vying to replace Big Bird next year. Unfortunately, this piece left me disappointed.
Manhattan: Jonathan Zimmerman’s commentary “The Peace Corps and White Saviorism” (March 1) is a very cynical piece. I am a returned Peace Corps volunteer (RPCV) who served in Cameroon, West Africa, in the 1990s. Zimmerman patently ignores the principal tenets of the organization.
