Plans still in the works for reopening George Floyd Square, preserving memorial

Created: April 22, 2021 06:03 PM
The city of Minneapolis tells 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS it is still finalizing "the timeline, process and approach" for reopening 38th and Chicago, the intersection known as George Floyd Square.
Barricades have blocked the intersection ever since George Floyd's death nearly 11 months ago.
Last month, the city announced they may not wait until the end of the Derek Chauvin trial to reopen the roads. However, two days after the verdict, the intersection remains closed.
5 EYEWITNESS NEWS asked the city for an update on their plans Thursday. A city spokesperson said:
"City leaders continue to meet with community stakeholders to discuss the best path forward for the future of the intersection, understanding this is a very important gathering space for healing and reflection. The City is also working with the Floyd family and community members on plans to peacefully commemorate the first anniversary of George Floyd's murder at this intersection. The safety and security of the neighborhood and community surrounding the intersection continues to be a top priority as those plans are developed. The interim design retaining the Fist Sculpture roundabout as well as partial or full reconnection are prominent planning factors for this work over the next month. We know that the short term goal is to reopen, but we are committed to sustained investments to help the community restore, reconnect, and rebuild."

Minneapolis Businesses See a Guilty Verdict As 'Justice Served' and an End to Protests

In Minneapolis, on the corner of 37th and Chicago Ave, Edwin Reed can hear the cheering.
Just minutes prior, a jury on Tuesday afternoon found the former 4th precinct police officer Derek Chauvin guilty of 2nd degree murder, 3rd degree murder, and 2nd degree manslaughter. Last May 25, Chauvin kneeled on George Floyd's neck for over nine minutes and killed him--sparking calls for justice and police reform in just about every corner of society, as well as continued protests all over the world.
Reed owns Sincere Detailing Pros, an auto-detail shop down the street from where Floyd was murdered. All year, he's managed protest after protest. But right now, the crowds are joyous--and it's a breath of fresh air, says Reed, who's owned his shop for nine years. "People gathering together over here, honking horns. They're excited."

A handful of business owners crowded before a restaurant television Tuesday, bracing for the verdict.
George Floyd died just a few yards away under the knee of police officer Derek Chauvin last year, turning their neighborhood into an international beacon for racial justice and police reform. They anxiously waited to see whether Chauvin would face consequences.
"This is crazy," said Sam Willis Jr., who wore a nervous grin and paced the length of his Just Turkey restaurant. "I hope it goes well. I think he's got to get one [conviction on the charges]. He's got to go down for one. I don't see him getting acquitted."

Just Turkey restaurant’s Sam Willis Jr. and other business owners in the square met with city officials about cash aid.
Minneapolis businesses struggling to survive inside the area known as George Floyd Square could soon get monetary help from the city.
The Business, Inspections, Housing and Zoning Committee has unanimously approved $50,000 interest-free, forgivable loans for small businesses and nonprofits behind the barricades surrounding the makeshift memorial where George Floyd struggled under the knee of a Minneapolis police officer.
