Four local electric suppliers believe that using self-contained micro-grids could be one way to hedge fears of power outages from winter storms and wildfires as efforts continue to decarbonize the power grid.
The panel at BizWest’s Net Zero Cities virtual event on Tuesday included Justin Brant, the utility program co-director at the Southwest Energy Efficiency Project; Darren Buck, director of power delivery at the Platte River Power Authority; Milton Geiger, energy resource director at the Poudre Valley Rural Electric Association and André Gouin, a business technology consultant at Xcel Energy of Colorado.

Indoor farmers market, Black Swamp Artisanal Market, to open in downtown Dover

Justin and Tara Brant are assembling a stable of vendors for an indoor farmers market in downtown Dover.
They plan to open Black Swamp Artisanal Market in April in a 1,200-square-foot store at 204 W. Loockerman St., leading a team of more than 30 vendors offering farm-fresh meats, eggs, vegetables, flowers, honey, ice cream and baked goods along with handcrafted soaps, lotions, jewelry and furniture.
“Our goal is to highlight local crafters and producers,” Justin Brant said.
The market is named after their farm in Felton, and they named their farm after the road it’s on.
The Brants started raising pigs and chickens two years ago, and they joined the Delaware Farm Bureau. Tara Brant is a registered nurse, retired from the Army, while Justin Brant serves in the Navy but looks to farm full-time soon.

On a summer evening in 2018, a set of tracer rounds from a shooting range ignited a fire near Basalt, Colo. Dry weather let the blaze grow into the Lake Christine Fire, which would burn more than 12,000 acres and destroy about half a dozen homes.
It also burned three of four transmission lines running into Aspen. If the fourth had gone down, the city could have lost electricity for weeks, according to Holy Cross Energy, the local power supplier.
