Ryukyu Shimpo – Okinawa, Japanese newspaper, local news » Digital Extra – Okinawan native Taira wins the Pacific League Rookie of the Year award after recording no losses and 33 holds as a relief pitcher for the Seibu Lions

The NPB Awards, which announces the season award winners in Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB), was held December 17, and the Rookie of the Year in the Pacific League was awarded to Seibu Lions’ right-handed relief pitcher Kaima Taira (21, Yaeyama Shoko High School). He is the first Okinawan native to win the rookie of the year award in professional baseball.
Taira was drafted by the Lions in the fourth round in 2017, entering the team in 2018.
This season, in his third year on the team, Taira was used as the set-up man, coming in just before the closer, appearing in a league high 54 games. In those games he recorded a record of one win, zero losses, a save, and a 1.87 ERA. He also recorded 33 holds, coming in second in the Pacific League to SoftBank’s Liván Moinelo’s 38. The outstanding achievement of making so many appearances without recording a single loss left a lasting impression across the league.

Sunday Notes: Winter Meetings Manager Potpourri

December 20, 2020
MLB managers not named Tony La Russa did Zoom calls with members of the media this past week. Today’s column features highlights from several of those sessions.

Two of the topics Dusty Baker addressed on Monday were job-related. One was the position he currently holds with the Houston Astros, the other was a role that’s never appealed to him. The latter is anathema to baseball’s Most Interesting Man in the World because it wouldn’t allow him to kick back and ruminate on life.
“One reason I never wanted to be a general manager is because you don’t really have an offseason,” Baker told a cohort of reporters. “He works all year, and doesn’t have much time off, but for the general manager, and front office people, this is the most busy time of the year.”

Tomoyuki Sugano, Yuki Yanagita win MVP honors in NPB

Dec 17, 2020
Yomiuri Giants pitcher Tomoyuki Sugano is going to have to find room in his suitcase for one more piece of hardware depending on his plans for 2021.
The Kyojin ace, who many expect to be pitching for an MLB club next season, was named the Central League MVP during the NPB Awards on Thursday night. Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks slugger Yuki Yanagita won the honor in the Pacific League.
Hiroshima Carp pitcher Masato Morishita was named Rookie of the Year in the CL, while Seibu Lions reliever Kaima Taira was the top rookie in the Pa League.
“I didn’t win this on my own,” Sugano said. “If the team didn’t win, I wouldn’t have gotten this, so I have to express my gratitude to a lot of people.”
