The youngest kids in Mass. shelters need more support, advocates warn

More than 3,000 homeless families are now in hotels and motels that often don’t have toys, books, or play spaces for children. There’s a new push to get these youngsters better access to stimulating environments and activities. Experts say it's key for brain development.

Horizons for Homeless Children seeking volunteers

KINGSTON — Horizons for Homeless Children has been working hard toward a safe return to volunteering.
The organization will be back to helping homeless children heal through play again this spring with new safety measures in place in outdoor settings.
There is still a high need for volunteer Playspace Activity leaders to provide two hours of healing play each week to homeless children. Volunteer shifts in this area are from 6 to 8 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays. For children living in a shelter, Playspace visits with PALs may be the one of the only opportunities to receive undivided attention from a caring adult. Playspace Programs allow children to play catch, march in a parade, learn to hula-hoop, or have a dance party and get some fresh air.
