Memorial to Captain Tom: Matt Hancock says war hero has a 'place in history' and should be honoured

A permanent memorial to inspirational Captain Sir Tom Moore should be built to recognise his contribution to the NHS, the government said this morning.
Secretary of State for Health Matt Hancock confirmed the 100-year-old had cemented his place in history after his heroic fundraising efforts.
He said his courageous rallying of the country during the coronavirus pandemic had symbolised resilience in the face of adversity.
His comments on a memorial came amid calls for Captain Sir Tom to be honoured on the Fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square or to receive a stone in Westminster Abbey.
Meanwhile, Boris Johnson has also announced a national round of applause at 6pm this evening.

Captain Tom: 'If tomorrow is my last day, and my loved ones are waiting, it will be good'

He could never quite understand the worldwide fame he garnered in 25 remarkable days in 2020, though he enjoyed every moment of it. But with Britain “at war” with the coronavirus, and health workers manning the front line during the first lockdown, the country cried out for someone to come through with a message of hope.
Former Army dispatch rider Captain Tom had been there before, fighting in the jungles of Burma. And, in what was to be the last year of his life, his time had come again.
Born in Keighley, West Yorkshire, on April 30, 1920, to a builder dad and headteacher mum, he was a bright pupil at Keighley Grammar School and a prize-winning motorcyclist, having bought his first motorcycle aged 12.

Captain Sir Tom Moore was a Second World War veteran who won the hearts of the British nation when he decided, aged 99, to walk 100 laps of his garden to help the NHS.
His determination captured the public imagination at the height of the coronavirus crisis and within days he had raised tens of millions of pounds.
The Queen’s first official engagement in person after lockdown lifted was to knight Sir Tom in a ceremony at Windsor Castle.
