Victoria University spends $18,000 protecting pedestrians from controversial flats

It was the first significant money the university had spent on the McLean flats since it bought them in 2019. The flats have been sitting empty since 2012 when they were found to be an earthquake risk.
The flats and the neighbouring heritage-listed Gordon Wilson flats have been embroiled in controversy since Victoria University bought the properties in order to transform the site into a gateway to the Kelburn campus.
The McLean Flats would be incorporated into the design, while the Gordon Wilson flats would be demolished. Both buildings have category 1 heritage status from Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga but McLean Flats are not on Wellington City Council’s heritage list. ....

Newark Castle to Finlaystone Burn in Inverclyde

Distance: 5 miles/8 kilometres
Time: 2.5 to 3 hours
Terrain: Established tarmac path and concrete walkway with a short walk along the sandy beach to reach the burn.
Level: Suitable for almost everyone. A flat level walk along the coastal path – with no hills.
Access: Easily accessed by train or bus to Port Glasgow. If travelling by car follow the A8 and at Port Glasgow take the turn-off to Ferguson’s shipyard – follow the road past the yard gates to a large car park beside Newark Castle. Newark Castle is 15 minutes walk from Port Glasgow train station. ....

Danish city design experts studying how Wellington walks

A memo to the LGWM project steering group revealed the study is focused on identifying and understanding the most common walking routes in the city.
“We currently count people walking annually, but we don’t study how, where or why they walk or why they may choose not to walk, “ the memo said.
“To unlock and better understand which barriers there are to increasing pedestrian commutes and establishing an efficient and engaging pedestrian network we need to understand which environments encourage walking.”

The capital city will see graduates of Te Herenga Waka Victoria University of Wellington celebrate the successful completion of their studies this week.
More than 2,840 qualifications will be awarded to 2,593 graduates across seven ceremonies. A further 37 graduates unable to attend previous ceremonies due to COVID-19 related disruption will also attend. This year the University is delighted to recognise its first Master of Communication at a graduation ceremony, on Thursday 20 May.
The University’s Chancellor, Neil Paviour-Smith, congratulates those graduating.
“This week’s ceremonies are extraordinary for the fact we are fortunate to be able to join and celebrate together in person. COVID-19 meant all our students had a very challenging year of study in 2020 especially those in their final year. So it is wonderful to be able to recognise the successful completion of their qualifications in this way. ....
