Eagle Scout Gathers, Retires Over 2,600 Old Flags Amid Pandemic

LAGUNA NIGUEL, CA A local Eagle Scout candidate gathered over 2,000 American flags during the coronavirus pandemic for his project. Pierce Stewart, a member of Troop 772 in Laguna Niguel, wanted to do something that would rally the community and generate a feeling of patriotism, especially while the coronavirus kept people apart.
Stewart, a sophomore at Aliso Niguel High School, began reaching out to neighbors for his flag collection and retirement project. Using flyers, he sent out word of his intention to collect and retire old or damaged flags across his neighborhood. The outreach touched the community in an outpouring of flags and goodwill to the rising Eagle Scout. ....

EAST HAMPTON, NY After years of discussion and deliberation, the East Hampton town board, in a majority vote, approved two agreements with South Fork Wind, LLC, advancing a proposal to build a 15-turbine wind farm in federal waters 30 miles east of Montauk Point.
In his State of the State last week, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said as New Yorkers focus on reconstruction after waging a battle against the coronavirus, the focus is on a green economy. And on Long Island, those plans include the two largest offshore wind projects in the nation, 60 miles offshore from Montauk and 20 miles off Jones Beach, Cuomo said. Training for new, green jobs is slated to take place right on Long Island, Cuomo added. ....

The Passport Restaurant was opened in Oct. 1974 by Frank and Sonia Sutula, owners of Suffield Caterers. Like the catering business, Sonia and the couple s daughters operated the restaurant, as Frank was chief of the Suffield Police Department at the time. Upon his retirement in 1980, he became a permanent fixture at 584 North Street. ....

SEATTLE King County s health officer is urging a renewed community effort to tamp down coronavirus transmission to help limit the potentially devastating effects of variant strains spreading elsewhere, which appear to be more infectious.
Dr. Jeff Duchin hosted his weekly coronavirus briefing Friday afternoon, which included some good news on recent declines in case counts, hospitalizations and deaths in the state s most populous county. However, Duchin warned against complacency, as vaccine supply continues to be inadequate and concerns that the variant strain could be detected locally any day now. ....
