in a normal year. a lot of this is desert but there are going to be many cities in the way of this impressive rainfall total, including the transverse range here to the north of l.a. some of that on top of those mountains will run right down into those big cities into the l.a. basin. you're going to have to be very, very cautious with this storm. this is a major impact event, and it's happening right now. >> we now know that at least 114 people died as a result of the massive wildfires on the hawaiian island of maui. teams are using heavy equipment to clean up the devastation in the city of lahaina. in an emotional address a few hours ago hawaii's governor josh green said that they've completed searching through more than 60% of the disaster area looking for survivors. green warns as the efforts continue the number of those killed is likely to rise each day. here he is. >> this process agonizing for the families waiting for word from their loved ones.

angeles is a city of latinos. you could see that line influence everywhere you go, right down to the street lights. and if you have something to do with colonization, you're right. the indigenous tongue bought into much people lived in the l.a. basin for centuries, it was claimed by spanish conquistador's, juan rodriguez kadyrov in 1842. in 1821, this land became a part of mexico until the end of the mexican american war in 1848, when mexico seeded 55% of its territory, including california, to the u.s.. but trust me, los angeles still loves offense mexican, and i couldn't think of a better person to welcome me to the real l.a. then this iconic mexican american, native angeleno, george lopez. and guess what? he's taking me to east l.a., and we are eating at his favorite spot. >> yes, sir.

through the l.a. basin, that is now moving into san diego. plenty of snow in the san diego mountains as well. the storm is going to move over to the four corners tomorrow, northern new mexico, southern colorado. gusty winds, 70 miles per hour. where we don't have snow we have dust can. could see some blowing dust that'll reduce visibility as the storm moves over to the plains. now on sunday is evening we've got the chance for some severe weather popping up over portions of oklahoma, just outside of oklahoma city. the intier area, 10 million people eyes to the sky where we could see some damaging winds, straight-line winds, 60 miles an hour. twisting thunderstorms, tornadoes possible. here's the timeline, 8 p.m. wichita to oklahoma city, this is a fast moving system. if you get a tornado warning in this area, these storms may be racing 50-60 miles per hour. you think about that, that's about a mile per minute, so you won't have much time to react and get to your safe spot. monday now we're looking at the chance for severe weather moving over portions of kentucky, right

water, moisture in the clouds goes up, rinks out more moisture when it hits the mountains. especially all the mountains like the sierra nevada but across a lot of mountains across southern california as well. this storm moving into tomorrow will be a southern california storm as well as northern california. we might see eight inches of rainfall around the l.a. basin. that will cause potential for significant flooding. san francisco on december 30 first saw the second wettest day of history of all time, and they had almost seven inches of rain since then. we're talking about 12, 13 inches of rain in period of eight or nine days in san francisco airport. this storm right here, heavy snow falling across the sierra nevada. that coming across in tonight and tomorrow night. that will be the one this week with the most moisture associated with it. so the rainfall totals will be extreme. we'll watch a lot of california looking for the threat of
