Florida Supreme Court rules against effort to legalize recreational marijuana
The Florida Supreme Court struck down a ballot initiative on Thursday that would allow Floridians to vote on the legalization of recreational marijuana.
The justices ruled in a 5-2 decision that the proposal was "misleading," according to The Miami Herald.
The ruling came after Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody (R) asked the court to advise on whether the proposal was suitable for a future ballot initiative.
The proposed initiative, put forth by Make it Legal Florida, would make it legal for Floridians 21 and older to possess 2.5 ounces of marijuana. Sponsors of the initiative had collected more than 556,000 signatures of the 891,589 needed to make it a ballot initiative in 2022. The effort also raised $8.2 million, according to the Herald.

Karen Goldstein attends a rally for Florida Attorney General candidate, Jim Lewis, who is running on a platform of legalizing marijuana on October 12, 2010 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. On Thursday, the Florida Supreme Court tossed out a ballot initiative for marijuana legalization.
An effort to get marijuana legalization on the ballot in Florida's 2022 election cycle was squashed by the state's Supreme Court on Thursday.
In a 5-to-2 ruling, the justices declared that the constitutional ballot initiative was "misleading" because the drug would still be illegal at the federal level.

Sarasota County moves again to restrict recreational cannabis, even if it's legalized in Florida

But as several constitutional amendments are likely headed to Florida voters in 2022 – and as state lawmakers look to consider a bill this year that would make it available for adults – Sarasota County officials again want to make it clear that recreational marijuana will not be allowed locally.
In the coming months, commissioners will be looking to craft a resolution that would give Sarasota County “home rule authority” over the use of recreational marijuana if it’s made legal statewide.
The effort contrasts with a growing number of voters who support legalizing marijuana and is contrary to the city of Sarasota, which recently voted to decriminalize the possession of small amounts of cannabis.
