Australia's largest-ever civil disobedience protest stops half a million tonnes of coal exports

They are calling it the largest civil disobedience climate protest in the history of Australia. This weekend, thousands of activists, young and old, from across the country descended on the world’s largest coal port at Muloobinba (Newcastle), on Awabakal and Worimi land and water.

Victoria ramps up climate target, but stays at lower end of recommended range

2 May 2021
The Victoria state Labor government on Sunday unveiled its long awaited climate change strategy, which now includes a ramped up target of slashing emissions by 45 to 50 per cent by 2030 – far more ambitious than the federal government’s mediocre target.
The Victoria government said the strategy will create new jobs and industries of the future, and keep the state on track to meet its target of zero emission by 2050. It has already cut its emissions by 24.8 per cent below 2005 levels, thanks mostly to its strong investment in renewables.
All of Australia’s states and territories already have a net zero target by 2050, despite the federal government’s refusal to embrace the same, and the push by Victoria to come into line with Australia’s major trading partners and allies will put more pressure on prime minister Scott Morrison.

Morrison mute on targets at Biden climate summit

The transmission technology initially failed when it was Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s turn to speak, which seemed apt as he continued to refuse to put a carbon emissions target for 2030.
Called by United States President Joe Biden, the summit was aimed at raising emissions reduction targets in the lead-up to COP26 in Glasgow in November.
The US used the summit to announce its decision to raise its emissions reduction target to 50-52% below 2005 levels by 2030.
US climate campaigners want for a target well above 50%. Karen Orenstein, Climate and Energy Program Director at Friends of the Earth, US, said
Biden’s commitment may seem ambitious, but it is “sharply inadequate and deeply unjust for the billions living in the Global South”.

Key points:
A clean-up of debris washed across a road in Port Fairy is continuing today after wild weather and large swells hit the town
Port Fairy was already experiencing coastal erosion as a consequence of climate change
A wildlife carer says the wild surf has also impact penguins in the area

Victoria and AEMO welcome certainty of Yallourn's early exit, as Taylor stokes fears

10 March 2021
EnergyAustralia announced an early closure of the Yallourn power station on Wednesday, but rather than throwing the energy market into chaos, the certainty of Yallourn’s closure has been uniformly welcomed by everyone other than the Morrison government.
The Australian Energy Market Operator, the institution responsible for keeping the lights on, praised the significant notice period given by EnergyAustralia, and that the closure of additional coal fired power stations are already expected over the next two decades.
“AEMO welcomes the certainty as to the future of the Yallourn Power Station and the commitment to build a 350-megawatt battery in the Latrobe Valley,” a spokesperson for AEMO said.
