Springfield's famous sandwich once again draws national attention

The capital city’s beloved horseshoe sandwich has again drawn national attention to Springfield.
This time the local culinary claim-to-fame garnered a feature article on the website for America's Test Kitchen.
The 'shoe’s history and versatility was at the heart of the article headlined “The Horseshoe Sandwich is the Meaty, Cheesy, Potato-y Pride of Springfield, Ill.” that appeared April 26 in the online magazine for the long-running PBS cooking show.
Kevin Pang, digital editorial director for America’s Test Kitchen, said he is constantly on the lookout for distinctive dishes.
“Before (America’s Test Kitchen) I founded a food website called The Takeout and the goal was to have a food site that wasn’t just about New York and San Francisco,” he wrote in an email. “We made sure to highlight dishes and food culture of the Midwest and beyond. So any stories about fish fries, cheese curds, Detroit pizzas and Jucy Lucys are always going to pique my interest.

Mansfield Playhouse getting facelift during shutdown

Their replacements — all 300 of them — are sitting in the downstairs space at the Playhouse.
"I found these online. This gentleman had them on eBay," Wertz said. "He had them listed for 20 bucks apiece and 20 bucks for shipping."
When the owner of the chairs found out the Playhouse is a nonprofit organization, he agreed to waive shipping costs.
Without the waiver, the chairs would have been out of the Playhouse's budget. At $6,000, they were manageable.
"We ended up using some of our savings," Wertz said.
Last fall, the Playhouse raised money with "Playhouse Pals." The "pals" paid to have their faces inserted on Styrofoam cutouts, giving the venue virtual fans during restrictions for COVID-19.

Springfield eatery honors brewmaster Edward L. Reisch by using beer

Monday is officially Edward L. Reisch Day in Springfield and Route 66 Motorheads Bar & Grill is celebrating the former capital city brewmaster by using his Reisch Gold Top Beer in several dishes.
The local brew will be featured in scratch-made brats, as well as the cheese sauce used with the signature Pretzel Tail Pipes and topping horseshoes made with the original Leland Hotel recipe.
George Reisch, Edward’s son, will be at the 600 Toronto Road bar and grill at 4:30 p.m. for a meet and greet. The younger Reisch is a retired brewmaster after 37 years with Anheuser-Busch in St. Louis.
Edward L. Reisch was the last brewmaster at Reisch Brewing Co., which operated in Springfield from 1849 to 1966. The brewery complex — which was razed in 1967 — was located on the ground currently home to the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. Edward Reisch died in July 2019.
