This is the cbs evening news with jeff glor. News with jeff glor reporting tonight from montecito, california. Glor good evening. First fire, now water. This area of Southern California has been hit by backtoback natural disasters. Just weeks after wifires stripped the land of natural barriers, heavy rain touched off massive mudslides that are now blamed for at least 15 deaths. More than two dozen others have been hurt. Some are still unaccounted for. Rescue teams are searching the mud for victims who didnt or couldnt evacuate. More than 50 were fortunate enough to be rescued. At least 100 homes have been wiped away, 1,500 more are in danger. The best way to understand the scope of the disaster that has unfolded here is to walk among these oncemagnificent homes for a closeup look and to fly above the devastation as we did earlier today. This morning search crews in Southern California are desperately looking for victims of the mudslides that have already killed 17 people. 17 more people are reported missing. Santa barbara county officials estimate 100 homes were destroyed as tons of mud, rock, and uprooted tries rolled downhill. A 30mile stretch of u. S.
