The cabinet has decided to continue the public vaccination process despite nearing the halfway mark of available doses. The Chief Medical Officer reportedly advised the cabinet to pause at the half-way mark to save enough for the second dose. The cabinet notes state “the CMO proposed that one half of the total be stored so that the second dose can be on hand to be administered in May and in June 2021”. However, the cabinet decided, “seven to ten thousand additional doses will continue to be applied, with the expectation that at least 14,000 doses will be secured through COVAX of PAH0/WHO by the end of April 2021”.

Vaccines from China and Russia could arrive on the island within days, once approved by the Antigua & Barbuda Pharmacy Council, according to Government Chief of Staff Lionel ‘Max’ Hurst.
“Just so long as the air freight is available or some sort of air transport, we are speaking about days once the council has approved it,” said Hurst.
“The number we asked of the Chinese is 100,000 and if that arrives, then we barely have to do any more begging, sorry, soliciting,” he added.

HURST REPORTS ON CABINET OF Thursday February 25 2021
The Cabinet met for more than seven continuous hours, six members using virtual means and seven meeting face-to-face. The Cabinet, as is customary, invited experts and officials to its weekly meeting in order to assist in enhancing decision-making.
1. The Cabinet invited seven experts from the Ministry of Health including the Chief Medical Officer, the Principal Nursing Officer, the Chief Health Inspector, the Ministry’s Technology Officer, and three members of the Technical Committee responsible for communicating new information to the public. The CMO shared the plan for vaccinating approximately 80,000 adults in 35 days. Five teams, each consisting of five staff and nurses, will be dispatched to several centers each day of the week (Saturday and Sunday also) during March and the first week of April 2021, to inoculate as many as 250 to 550 people each, daily for a period of 35 days (5 X 500=2,500 X 35=87,500). Two days will be dedicated to Barbuda in order to vaccinate approximately 1,000 adults living there. This approach will allow the Ministry to achieve herd immunity in the state; that accomplishment will in turn make Antigua and Barbuda very safe, though the Covid-19 protocols will continue to apply. It is anticipated that the 40,000 vials of vaccine will be capable of vaccinating 40,000 men and women. The medicines will arrive Antigua this weekend. Another 100,000 vials will be required within two months in order to provide the second inoculation which will bring 100% efficacy to the population of recipients of the vaccine. The Serum Institute of India will likely provide 100,000 vials as requested.

It was with mixed feelings that we heard the news that Cabinet had appointed three ministers to to be part of a sub-committee to keep an eye on LIAT. The sub-committee has been tasked with providing regular updates to Cabinet as to LIAT’s progress, or lack thereof. Yes, since it is our government’s money that is being spent, we think that it is prudent to appoint a LIAT watchdog. Good move! But that’s where the plaudits end. We are mystified at the three persons selected to be Cabinet’s chief LIAT watchdogs – Minister Molwyn Joseph, Minister Lennox Weston and Minister Robin Yearwood. Don’t laugh!

Yesterday was the birthday of the father of  our nation, Sir Vere Cornwall Bird Sr. Were he alive today, he would have been 111 years. We are indeed grateful that the good Lord, in his infinite wisdom, lent Sir V.C. to us for a season.
He was our Moses, the man who led us out of the wilderness of colonialism, deprivation and despair. Dr. Natasha Lightfoot referred to those awful conditions in her book by the same name,
TROUBLING FREEDOM. True, the good doctor was referring to the period immediately after emancipation in 1834, but those conditions have persisted, some, even unto this day. (See also Papa Sammy’s,
