The Nugent name is synonymous with Antigua and Barbuda. Much has been written about their involvement with the Skerretts aka Clare Hall and  Follys estates. They were connected to the Antigua Grammar School (AGS) and Archdeacon Samuel Edmund Branch who founded it in 1884, and was its headmaster from that time until 1927.  The AGS was first located at the top of St Mary’s Street, before it moved to the old treasury building near the Bryson’s Bottling Plant, across from the General Post Office at the bottom of High Street. That building also housed the Public Library upstairs. It was severely damaged in the great earthquake of 1974 and abandoned.

Efforts to inform and update the nation about Covid-19 vaccines are being stepped up – but government warns their arrival into Antigua and Barbuda is still “several months” away.
A body of local medical experts who will be tasked with choosing which vaccine the nation receives – and who should be prioritised to receive it – has now been assembled.
The national technical working group was formally launched this week in line with requirements from regional agencies leading the vaccines’ distribution.
Health Minister Molwyn Joseph said the group – chaired by pathologist Dr Lester Simon – comprised some of the country’s “brightest minds”.

Cabinet watchdogs

It was with mixed feelings that we heard the news that Cabinet had appointed three ministers to to be part of a sub-committee to keep an eye on LIAT. The sub-committee has been tasked with providing regular updates to Cabinet as to LIAT’s progress, or lack thereof. Yes, since it is our government’s money that is being spent, we think that it is prudent to appoint a LIAT watchdog. Good move! But that’s where the plaudits end. We are mystified at the three persons selected to be Cabinet’s chief LIAT watchdogs – Minister Molwyn Joseph, Minister Lennox Weston and Minister Robin Yearwood. Don’t laugh!
