Thunder Force Review: Melissa McCarthy and Octavia Spencer try to save the day in this predictable comedy

Led by Melissa McCarthy and Octavia Spencer, one would expect Thunder Force to be a hell of a ride, loaded with comedy. The film, to an extent, delivers on the latter with funny moments and ample punch lines. It also tries to deliver punches as the leading ladies turn superwomen to take on the Miscreants (yes, it’s exactly what you think it is). However, the fun is short-lived, thanks to lazy writing and predictable execution.
The story of Thunder Force revolves around Lydia (McCarthy) and Emily (Spencer), who strike a friendship after Lydia, the brash kid with a heart of gold, saves Emily, the studious kid with a mission, from bullies. Emily’s parents have been killed in an attack by the Miscreants, a group of villains with superpowers, and Emily has vowed to avenge their death. For that, she intends to complete the research work started by her parents to find a solution to the miscreants’ issues. While Emily grows up to complete that mission of hers, she and Lydia have a falling out in college. Lydia, on the other hand, sticks to a routine job of driving forklifts until one day when she decides to go visit Emily at her office. One thing leads to another and a silly mistake from Lydia leads her to be injected with a superhuman serum that Emily’s team has developed. With things going out of hand, Emily decides to take the other serum course for herself and the audience gets Thunder Force, a team that is ready to take the Miscreants, head on!

Following her latest action-comedy “Thunder Force,” one can only hope that Melissa McCarthy might be thunder-
forced to reconcile with the fact that the vast majority of her lead-role flops have one common denominator: writer/director Ben Falcone, her husband.
To be fair, Falcone is
not responsible for the 2013 trainwreck “Identity Thief;” however, he flushed any goodwill by helming “Tammy,” “The Boss,” “Life of the Party” and “Superintelligence.” Knowing this track record, the follies of “Thunder Force” are already synonymous with the McCarthy-Falcone flick schtick: A boring narrative provides an excuse for McCarthy and her co-stars’ talent to be indigested by soulless writing and direction. There are worse things to consume, but few are as bland.

'Thunder Force' movie review: A mirthless addition

Cosmic-ray blasts. Sociopaths-turned-lethal villains. Two friends taking on the supreme evil. On the face of it, this superhero film has everything going for it. But the interesting bits stop right there. Finally the only entertaining parts in Ben Falcone’s latest Netflix film, Thunder Force, are the leads—the talented Melissa McCarthy and Octavia Spencer. Though billed as a ‘superhero comedy’, the fifth film from the husband-wife duo, Falcone and McCarthy, Thunder Force kind of warns us that we may be running dry on good superhero content. With its forced LOL moments, it is definitely not in the same league-or-half of The Incredibles or even Deadpool.
