Following her latest action-comedy “Thunder Force,” one can only hope that Melissa McCarthy might be thunder-
forced to reconcile with the fact that the vast majority of her lead-role flops have one common denominator: writer/director Ben Falcone, her husband.
To be fair, Falcone is
not responsible for the 2013 trainwreck “Identity Thief;” however, he flushed any goodwill by helming “Tammy,” “The Boss,” “Life of the Party” and “Superintelligence.” Knowing this track record, the follies of “Thunder Force” are already synonymous with the McCarthy-Falcone flick schtick: A boring narrative provides an excuse for McCarthy and her co-stars’ talent to be indigested by soulless writing and direction. There are worse things to consume, but few are as bland.

The Netflix Top 10 has become a mainstream guide for what folks are watching at home.
This week, the most watched flick on Netflix was the superhero comedy “Thunder Force.”
Is it worth your time? Only if you turn off your brain to appreciate a few masterful comedy scenes sandwiched between otherwise lackluster material of the slapstick genre variety.
The plot follows a Chicago forklift operator, Lydia (Melissa McCarthy), who reunites with her childhood best friend, Emily (Octavia Spencer). The latter has devoted her life to scientific research that accidentally unlocks superpowers to fight deadly mutant criminals.
Spencer rarely appears in such broad comedies. She’s better playing comic relief in dramatic films (i.e. the pie scene in “The Help”). In “Thunder Force,” she seems to be phoning it in a bit, forced to play the serious straight woman to McCarthy’s zany antics.

Movie review: 'Thunder Force' ushers in a cool new breed of dynamic duo

Of all the superhero movies that have flooded our screens in recent years, the one that still stands out as the most fun is 2017's "Thor: Ragnarok," a film that was serious about not taking itself seriously. Even though "Thunder Force" is not up at the same budget - or star power-level as a Marvel Universe film, it's definitely a contender in the "superhero movies can be fun" category. It's also a refreshing, kind of crazy take on the genre.
A brief introduction tells of a peculiar event in the early-1980s that caused some people to turn into Miscreants - super-powered sociopaths who wreak havoc on the populace. Moving along to the late-1980s, a Miscreant-related incident leads to the death of husband-and-wife scientists who were developing a technique that would give regular people the power to fight back against these troublemakers. Their young, bright, suddenly orphaned daughter Emily vows to dedicate her life to continuing her parents' work.
