People over the years had found in canada there was clearly a fossil marsh. A place that used to be a swamp dried out and they found all sorts of happy swamp fossils there, ferns and animals and fish that were recognized. People realized with the age of the rocks as computed by traditional scientists this would be a reasonable place to look for in animal, a fossil of an animal that lived there.
