Marvel's M.O.D.O.K. Follows a Villain in a Midlife Crisis


Patton Oswalt stars in the new Hulu animated series.

As Marvel continues to plumb the depths of their extensive catalogue of heroes and villains, the company’s more obscure characters are getting their moment in the sun. And few are as delightfully bizarre and goofy as M.O.D.O.K. (Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing), a giant-headed genius whose cranium is so packed with evil plans that he can only travel via hoverchair. M.O.D.O.K was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, and first appeared in
Tales of Suspense #93–94 (September–October 1967). In the ensuing decades he kept popping up, battling the Avengers, the X-Men, and many others.

Given all that, we thought it would be a fun exercise to sit down with
M.O.D.O.K. co-creator Jordan Blum to walk through the scene, which was (full disclosure) penned by ex-Onion, Inc. staffer Cullen Crawford. The result is part-DVD commentary, part interview, and can be found in the video above.

A villainous move: M.O.D.O.K. comes into his own as a Marvel star


Patton Oswalt had no problem deciding what Marvel supervillain M.O.D.O.K. might sound like.
“M.O.D.O.K.’s voice is just an amplified, more treble-y version of my own voice,” the Grammy-winning actor says. “It’s me when I’m at my whiniest and angriest and petty. So that’s all I had to do – sort of crank it up that way.”
Oswalt, who also does voiceover work on sitcoms (he’s the narrator on “The Goldbergs”), films (he’s Remy in “Ratatouille”) and countless specials, wanted to bring M.O.D.O.K. to life because he had appeared in so many superhero comics as the villain who wouldn’t disappear.

M.O.D.O.K. review: An excellent supervillain sitcom

Rick And Morty, where instead of being a bunch of nonsense where nothing matters, it’s a bunch of nonsense that takes itself seriously. Some of the Marvel stuff is used to set up jokes that comic fans will appreciate more than others (famously annoying villain Arcade shows up and shouts “I hope you like being confused!” while laying out his needlessly complicated evil scheme, which is
perfect), but that comes more from the show emphasizing a playful take on what these iconic characters are like more than just trying to score points with the nerds.
Nowhere is any of that clearer than with M.O.D.O.K. himself, voiced here by series co-creator Patton Oswalt (a role that he was born to play, if there’s a way to say that without it sounding like an insult). This version of M.O.D.O.K. is petty and small and bitter over the fact that life hasn’t given him what he thinks he deserves, specifically

MODOK Clip Gives Us a Mad Scientist Fight – /Film

M.O.D.O.K., the new Hulu animated series that puts the Marvel supervillain through a midlife crisis, has released a new clip featuring something everyone wants: a mad scientist fight.
Patton Oswalt voices the title character, a Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing, and he’s really going through some stuff. Watch the surprisingly long
