Zero-emission, hydrogen-powered catamaran visits San Francisco's Pier 9
KTVU's Debora Villalon reports.
SAN FRANCISCO - The San Francisco Bay has an unusual visitor in port for the next week.
It's the Energy Observer, a one-of-a-kind vessel that tied up at Pier 9 Thursday evening.
The 100-foot catamaran is zero-emission and hydrogen-powered.
"Someone has to be the tip of the spear on this," said Ted Pollak, a spectator who watched the boat dock. "I'm really excited about what they accomplished."
When the Energy Observer passed under the Golden Gate Bridge, observers might have wondered if it was from a futuristic movie.
Covered with solar panels and boasting two tall wings for wind propulsion, it drew stares from bridge pedestrians.

In nod to sensitivities, marketers adjust Mother's Day messaging

They follow global brands like Marks & Spencer, Etsy, Aesop, Pandora jewelry and Deliveroo, who have offered opt-outs for Mother's Day, Father's Day or both.
Lillie Sun, a growth marketer with Three Ships, pitched a Mother's Day opt out to the company's founders after receiving a similar email from online marketplace Etsy.
"I have a friend who lost a parent almost a year ago and also someone else really close to me was struggling to get pregnant, and I've always been very conscious around Mother's Day not to bring up memories...that might be uncomfortable," she said.
"I don't know all of our customers, but I'm sure there are people on our email list who are in the same boat... so it was a no-brainer."

Summer is on its way, and unsurprisingly, the list of albums coming out in May is at least partially a reflection of that. A lot of these records are livelier and sunnier than their wintertime counterparts—but also compared with last year’s summer releases, many of which saw significant delays thanks to the pandemic. But as the world wakes up, thanks to mass vaccination, the soundtrack should be excellent: New music from St. Vincent, NCT Dream, Mannequin Pussy, and more. Whether you’re finishing up the school year or just getting ready to start leaving work early on Fridays now and again, it’s nice to know your ears will be ready to party, too. (And if you don’t feel like being cheery, fear not—there’s a few great metal albums on the horizon, too.)

Supporters of the push to make Lubbock, Texas a "sanctuary city for the unborn" gather at a watch party held at Trinity Church in Lubbock, Texas on May 1, 2021. | Mark Lee Dickson
One of the largest cities in Texas has become the most populous city in the country thus far to outlaw abortion within the city’s limits and become a “sanctuary city for the unborn.”
In a referendum Saturday, a supermajority of voters in the city of Lubbock, Texas, voted to approve an ordinance making it “unlawful for any person to procure or perform an abortion of any type and at any stage of pregnancy in the City of Lubbock, Texas.”

Searching For a Dakini on a Motorcycle in the Himalayas | Best Indian American Magazine | San Jose CA

‘Looking For A Lady With Fangs and A Moustache’ Film Poster.
This is the story of Tenzin (Tsering Tashi Gyalthang), a forward-thinking Tibetan young man who has a dream of creating Kathmandu’s best coffee shop. It would be lovely to sip a chai and bite into a croissant on the mall road overlooking the Himalayas.
But there’s a proverbial fly in the ointment. Tenzin is afflicted by a recurring prescient nightmare. He has a modern mindset and is not superstitious like some of his townsfolk. However, the recurrent dream of his incumbent death drives him to seek out ancient Buddhist monks for guidance. The monk gives him a black thread with six knots and a cryptic message to seek out a dakini and ask her for a life-saving boon. Now starts an incomprehensible and somewhat shady trek of the protagonist. Armed with a red ladies slipper, he follows many young women down the hills, on busy streets, in long skirts, ankle bells, and kohled eyes. On his own personal quest, Tenzin also tries to help his friend in his romantic aspirations to woo a Tibetan singer. His journey takes the viewer on a motorcycle ride from dawn to dusk, through winding roads, misty mountains, elaborately carved ancient temples, and waterfalls. This part is quite picturesque and effortlessly crafted by the executive cinematographer, Mark Lee Ping-bing.

Federal judge dismisses lawsuit challenging Connecticut's transgender athlete policy

On Sunday, a federal judge dismissed a lawsuit challenging Connecticut’s policy allowing transgender high school athletes to compete in sports based on their gender identity, which has served as the impetus for dozens of states to consider legislation banning transgender females from competing in women’s sports.
In a ruling released on Sunday, U.S. District Court Judge Robert Chatigny dismissed the lawsuit on procedural grounds, noting that two of the four cisgender plaintiffs bringing the suit — Chelsea Mitchell, of Canton, and Selina Soule, of Glastonbury, had since graduated and are thus ineligible to compete in Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference events. Similarly, the two transgender athletes whose participation was challenged — Andraya Yearwood of Cromwell and Terry Miller of Bloomfield — have also graduated, thus removing the alleged “harms” claimed by plaintiffs.

In the wake of actor Shane Pow's drink-driving charge, which saw him being dropped by Mediacorp, veteran actor-comedian Mark Lee has said he is open to signing the 29-year-old actor.
Pow was charged last Thursday (April 22) with drink driving, his second such offence. Mediacorp announced on Monday that it is terminating his contract.
In an interview with Shin Min Daily News on Tuesday, Lee, 52, who praised Pow for his acting and looks, said: "If (Pow) doesn't mind joining our company, I'm willing to give him a chance to sign with us," he said.
Lee started a production house, King Kong Media Production, in 2017 and has local artistes such as Marcus Chin and Henry Thia signed to the company.

Allan Marley Lee

“The Smartest. The Strongest. The Funniest. Our Boppa”
Allan Marley Lee, AKA Boppa, died on April 20, 2021, at the age of 97. Boppa was a proud Navy Veteran, who after his time in service, drove for Thomas Industries for 30 + years. During Boppa’s long life, he enjoyed golfing, traveling to California and Canada, bowling and drinking his boxed wine. He also enjoyed making sure all the little birds and squirrels were fed no matter where he was. Many in the community knew him as Santa Clause, as he dressed up for events during the holidays to bring happiness and cheer to all. However, the deed he took most pleasure in was being stubborn, giving people a hard time in a playful way, while making all those around him laugh. He never hesitated to share his life lessons and philosophies, which will be carried on by everyone he taught, guided, and touched in such a significant way. The most extraordinary role he played during his life was being the earthly rock for his family. Boppa cherished his family with all his might, always ensuring everyone was happy and taken care of. He referred to his tribe as “Boppa’s “Dummies”. His dummies he is survived by are daughters: Sharon Lee Willis and Diane Lee; son: Mark Lee; grandchildren: Clint Willis, Shanna Lee, Leslie Harrison, Tiffanie Lee Witt and Shawn Cohoon; great grandchildren: Trinity, John Hunter, Aly, Deacon, Lydia Grace, Collins, Grace and Jackson.

Arroyo Burro Open Space to Undergo Restoration; Police Chief Talks Prevention Instead of Arrests

Housing and Development Newsletter
Interim Police Chief Bernard Melekian spoke to the City Council on Tuesday, calling for the city to focus on intervention and prevention rather than arrests and enforcement.
Melekian outlined a three-pronged strategy of prevention, intervention and enforcement. He talked about the importance of partnering with the community to provide after-school programs and alternatives for young people to do, instead of just "hanging out."
"For the longest time, law enforcement saw its role solely as to solve the crime and arrest the perpetrator," Melekian said. "But it is very clear that this is no longer enough."
"One of the challenges for all of us is to redefine the notion of safety," Melekian said. "The challenge for the police department, and for all of us, is not to make arrests, but to make those arrests unnecessary."

Peter Weir's "Gallipoli" 40 years on: deftly directed and still devastating

Card image cap

With the release of the first-world-war film “Gallipoli” in 1981, director Peter Weir could finally shrug off the nickname he had laboured under since making his first films: “Peter Weird”.
Idiosyncratic work like “Homesdale” (1971), “The Cars That Ate Paris” (1974), and the deeply atmospheric, metaphysical dramas “Picnic at Hanging Rock” (1975) and “The Last Wave” (1977) had earned Weir a reputation for making quirky, mysterious, genre-bending films. His gift for creating mood and atmosphere at times overwhelmed his concern with linear narrative.
This tendency seemed to change quite consciously with “Gallipoli”. Weir has said the inspiration for the story came from a trip to Anzac Cove in 1976. Flying back to Australia from London, he took a detour to Turkey. At the Gallipoli Peninsula, walking in still-extant trenches, Weir found not just shrapnel and bullet-casings, but also the personal effects of young soldiers. These tiny mementos poking out of the earth were probably the final objects held by some young men before they died.

MANKATO, Minn. (KEYC) — Two local baseball coaches with plenty of history crossed paths earlier this year.
Mankato Loyola baseball head coach Jeff Reese is a mainstay in the dugout
For decades, the legendary skipper coached at New Richland Hartland Ellendale Geneva before taking some years off, only to return to the game as coach of the Crusaders where he’s now in season number five.
“I always said that baseball, you get addicted to it. I know my sun is setting a little bit, but I still enjoy coaching,” said Reese.
