Im one of those rare creatures that we profile in this book. The font is conservative professors on liberal arts campuses or intimidated. There is the sense that conservatives are moving into enemy territory. But that isnt what we found. We interviewed over 150 conservatives in the social sciences and humanities. And we found they tell us the universituniversity is a much me tolerant place than we sometimes think and then the rightwing critics of the university tell us it is. What specifically did you hear from these professors . A lot of them felt away from home in the university because large swaths of the university are not as politicized as we think they are and the conservatives gravitate towards the least politicized quarters of the academy. Wakeup call for us and we say, whoa, youre right. We want to be the country that we have long been with want to be the country that sets the right International Norms elm want to be the country setting the example that other people should follow that will make the world better. We need to get out there. We need to be saying to other states, yeah, we are going to be in this in between war and peace land forever where threats wont look like uniformed military personnel. So how do we collectively come up with some kind of International Rules and institutions that both recognize that those threats are real but dont throw human rights and the rule of law out the window in order to respond .
