Maui police revised the death toll of the individuals killed in the Aug. 8 wildfire to 97, down from previous reports of 115; and say the number of individuals unaccounted for has also dropped to 31, down from 66 last week.
The wildfires in Maui first began on August 8 and have since taken the lives of more than 100 people and laid waste to thousands of structures across the island, most of which are residential.
Experts in DNA analysis, forensic anthropology, and cadaver dog handling, among others, have been called to help recover and identify the remains of over 100 people who died in a Hawaii town last week. The group includes veterans of September 11 services and the US state of California's deadliest wildfire last year. ANDE, a company that specialises in rapid DNA technology, and Colorado parks staff are also among those helping. As the number of victims continues to rise, with two identified so far, authorities say the full toll may not be known for weeks or months.
