Leonard was born on July 19, 1952 to the union of the late Booker T. Leonard Sr. and Josie M. Evans – Leonard of Quitman Clay, Louisiana. Carolyn attended L.G. Pinkston High School in Dallas, Texas and graduated in 1970. She met her best friend Kester L. Barrie (d. 2018) whom she loved dearly and between the two, God blessed them with a baby girl.
