Kids enjoyed their time at Mercer Island PTA’s Special Services and Learning Differences (SSALD) committee’s inaugural SPED Community Day to celebrate belonging and inclusion on May 4 at the Northwood Elementary School lower parking lot. Rotary Club of Mercer Island sponsored the event with support from the Mercer Island School District. The free May the Fourth gathering welcomed all families to meet with city officials (including those from the police and fire departments), touch a truck, visit about 20 resource tables, participate in various activities and workshops and enjoy entertainment. Mercer Island High School’s drill team excelled with a pair of second-place finishes at the recent dance/drill state championships at the Yakima Valley SunDome. On March 23 in the 1A/2A/3A state event, the locals notched second in the 3A military competition (273.00 points) and were runner-up in the 1A/2A/3A kick category (266.90). Individually, freshman driller Bella Liang finished third in the drill down results. This is the drill team’s first runner-up placement in 18 years and its first time snagging runner-up placements in two categories simultaneously.
