How to remove, in a very Marianist way, what divides us.
In a divided democracy, the signs of discord can be found everywhere. “Unfriend me” or “unfollow me” have been popular social media posts for distancing ourselves from those not holding the same beliefs.

With a click, we remove a point of possible conflict in our lives, and for a moment, we may even feel better. But we’re also removing a friend, family member, colleague or acquaintance — and along with them, we lose an opportunity for understanding and growth.
There’s a better way to respond to this disconnect. The Marianists have modeled it since 1800, and the University of Dayton has embedded it in its education since its founding in 1850. Community building — or rebuilding — requires dialogue and dedication, with rewards for both neighborhood and nation.

UD's Technical Institute: A history that leads to the present

Two longtime professors reflect on the founding of the Technical Institute at the University of Dayton and how the program began as a Marianist response to the needs of the community. Its roots can be found today in undergraduate and graduate programs within the School of Engineering. Former Technical Institute faculty would love to hear from their students.
From the late 1930s into the 1960s, the city of Dayton was a hotbed of major industrial activity. Corporations such as the National Cash Register Co., General Motors (five plants!), Monsanto Chemical, McCall’s Publishing and Duriron all called Dayton home. The workforce at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base added to the significant weekly payroll. This concentration of industry, much of it technical in nature, created an increasing demand on the University of Dayton’s night school, particularly during the post-World War II years. It was not only a matter of tailoring specific course offerings — a problem in and of itself — but there was also the further concern that students, being full-time employees, could not be expected to continue at night to complete a four-year degree program.

The first University of Dayton tenants have moved into the Arcade — and it's a sight to behold. Take a behind-the-scenes look at the new spaces of The Hub, soon to be a center of student learning, growing and connecting in downtown Dayton.
To compare the transformation of the Dayton Arcade to a phoenix rising from the ashes hardly begins to capture the magnitude of what’s taking place in the city that is home to the University of Dayton. Unlike in recent years — which found this historic block of buildings derelict and often open to the elements — now the only birds you’ll find in the space are turkeys. Painted statues of them sit on lofty perches above the atrium against a backdrop of intricate molding, with the blue sky beyond the glass ceiling.
