John Tortorella is out as Columbus Blue Jackets coach after six seasons. No replacement was named.
The Blue Jackets were 18-26-12 this season and tied the Detroit Red Wings for last in the eight-team Discover Central Division. It was the first time Columbus missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs since 2015-16, Tortorella's first season as its coach.
"After discussion and consideration of the future direction of the team, Jarmo [Kekalainen, Blue Jackets general manager] and I have come to a mutual agreement to part ways," Tortorella said. "I'd like to thank the Columbus Blue Jackets organization for the opportunity to coach this team and live in the great Columbus area. It has been a privilege to work with the players, coaches and hockey operations staff, which is one of the best in the League. Also, I want to thank the CBJ fans and the community for the support they've given the team and for the work of the CBJ family in support of the community."

The Blue Jackets lost a 5-2 final to Detroit on Friday night at Nationwide Arena in the penultimate game of the 2021 season.

Columbus played a solid first 30 minutes to take a 2-0 lead then watched the Red Wings score three times in just over three minutes late in the second to take a 3-2 lead into the second intermission. The Blue Jackets couldn't find the equalizer from there in the third, with Detroit adding two late empty-net goals to end the CBJ point streak at five games.

PREVIEW: Blue Jackets finish season tonight vs. Detroit

While the Blue Jackets and Red Wings are battling for draft position and lottery odds instead of a playoff spot -- with last night's win, Detroit moved one point ahead of Columbus at the bottom of the Central Division -- CBJ head coach John Tortorella has too much respect for the game to put that battle ahead of the one the teams will have on the ice to finish the season tonight.
In other words, there will be no tanking from the Jackets as they lace 'em up for the final time against the Wings.
"Oh God, I don't know how to spell (tank) and I don't think our athletes know how to spell it," Tortorella said earlier this week.

It all ends this weekend.
The 56-game season comes to a close with a back-to-back, as Columbus and Detroit will play tonight and Saturday to finish things off. While the Blue Jackets have started to play better hockey, as the shock of the trade deadline has worn off and the depleted roster has meshed some during a five-game point streak, the team is still ready to put this season behind it.
Sure, the front office brass has taken the chance to see some new faces in new situations down the stretch, and Columbus has played with pride in recent games against a pretty strong set of opponents. Yet being out of the playoffs for the first time since 2015-16 has made for a rough finish to the season.

Oliver Bjorkstrand scored two goals and added an assist Wednesday as the Columbus Blue Jackets beat the visiting Nashville Predators 4-2.
The Blue Jackets got the go-ahead goal with 6:10 remaining, when Mikhail Grigorenko redirected a slap shot from Vladislav Gavrikov past Nashville goalie Juuse Saros.
Bjorkstrand's empty-net goal with 0.5 seconds left sealed the outcome.
Nashville (29-22-2, 60 points) still holds the fourth and final playoff position in the Central Division, four points ahead of the Dallas Stars, who lost 6-2 to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Wednesday. The Stars have two games in hand on the Predators.

For the first time all season, the Jackets will play on a Wednesday, as Game No. 54 will be tonight against Nashville at Nationwide Arena. Columbus will look to build on a strong third period in Monday's game, featuring Emil Bemstrom's natural hat trick, before finishing things up Friday and Saturday against Detroit. It's also a 20th anniversary night spotlighting Rick Nash, and you can see the Hockey at Home episode he did with Bob McElligott on YouTube.

Next week the Leafs have three games against the Habs; Monday, Thursday and Saturday. Monday’s game is in Montreal, while the others are in Toronto. Saturday’s game is also the final home game for the regular season. These games could help determine who the Leafs play in the first round since the Jets continue to flounder, losing six games in a row, and are now only two points up on the Habs. Some Montreal wins next week could put them in third place, knocking the Jets down to fourth where they would face the Leafs in the playoffs. That would also mean the Leafs would have to lose to the Habs all week, which... I don’t like any of these options! Just win all the games, Leafs.

PREVIEW: Blue Jackets set to play last road game of year at Carolina

For the last time on the season, the Blue Jackets will hit the road tonight.
Just five games remain on the 56-game slate and the last four will be in Nationwide Arena, with the Jackets now reaching milestones on the road to completing the campaign.
There will be no playoff hockey for Columbus, so the last eight days of the campaign will be it. There will be more game days than off days in the schedule down the stretch, a stark change from the last three days, as Columbus has not played since Tuesday's 1-0 shootout win over Detroit that snapped a nine-game winless skid.
