In 1972, Diana Ross was Oscar nominated for recreating music legend Billie Holiday in the glitzy biopic “Lady Sings the Blues.” Although moviemakers rewrote many details of the performer’s life, and the film played like a standard Hollywood treatment of an extraordinary life, it showed how powerful an actress Ross could be on screen.
Some 49 years later, a singer named Andra Day should be Oscar nominated for daring to create a fresh take on this Holiday’s story in “The United States vs. Billie Holiday.” Like Ross, the singer is a smash as a film actress; unlike Ross, Day chooses to precisely recreate the unique Holiday approach to a song. From her first moments as Holiday, this performer-turned-actress captures the imagination of the lens as she tries to unpack the complex layers that define a music legend.

'Masks are our friends': DPH chief talks COVID, vaccines in CT

DPH chief: Primary care docs likely to offer COVID vaccines by fall

Responding to objections from doctors who want to provide COVID-19 vaccinations within their own offices, the state’s top public health official said Thursday she expects primary care physicians to be able to offer inoculations by late summer or early fall.
The Connecticut State Medical Society is raising the concern, pointing to difficulties some patients have finding vaccine appointments — and to the bond of trust between doctor and patient that could coax some hesitant people to get the vaccination.

On a day when Connecticut’s COVID positivity rate was the lowest it’s been in weeks, Gov. Ned Lamont announced a reopening plan Thursday that will allow restaurants and most businesses to return to full capacity this month.
But masks and social distancing will still be required.
Starting March 19, capacity limits will be lifted at all restaurants, retail stores, personal services facilities, houses of worship, museums, aquariums, zoos, office buildings and other similar businesses.
Commercial gatherings like wedding halls will be limited to 100 people indoors and 200 outside. Private residential gatherings will be limited to 25 people inside and 100 outside.

From much of Bridgeport to large swaths of New Haven, Connecticut has honed in on the areas it plans to direct at least a quarter of all new COVID vaccines in the coming weeks.
The state Department of Public Health has designated these 50 key areas by ZIP code and has committed to ensure 25 percent of all new vaccines reach residents there in a pivotal step to bolster vaccinations in vulnerable communities.

A centerpiece sequence in the marvelous film “Supernova” places the two lead characters in the middle of a delightful dinner party filled with family and friends, love and laughter, food and wine. Together they reminisce about the past, wonder about the future, and celebrate the joys of connecting with others. It’s a pivotal moment in the film, and a special one for any of us watching. After nearly a year of COVID-19 mandated isolation, watching how these people on screen spontaneously gather with such warmth is a welcome change from days filled with social distance.

Gov. Ned Lamont on Monday released new guidelines for how the COVID-19 vaccine will now be distributed in Connecticut.
The governor shifted away from previous plans to prioritize frontline essential workers and those with underlying medical conditions to focus on age groups and educators. Lamont’s plan deviates from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance that other states are following.

As children, we wonder who our parents may become as they age. We may be curious what we will need to do, and be, to help our folks when duties to care shift generations. And we will likely hope that we can remain patient no matter how challenging the experience may become.
Movies like to explore this natural passage. Melvyn Douglas and Gene Hackman were Oscar nominated in the 1970s for playing an aging father dealing with a younger son in “I Never Sang for My Father.” A decade later, Jack Lemmon and Ted Danson covered similar ground in “Da.” Twenty years later, Laura Linney and Phillip Seymour Hoffman shared the burden of caring for an aging father in “Savages” while Christopher Plummer and Ewan MacGregor discovered what generations can share in “Beginners.”
