Norfolk business owners, police and other city officials took part in a special training Thursday as part of a collaborative effort with a consulting firm to curb crime and make downtown safer.

After a series of shootings in downtown Norfolk, the Downtown Norfolk Council has brought in consulting firm Safe Night to help develop a comprehensive nightlife management program. The company previously worked with bar owners and government officials in Arlington, Virginia and Dallas, Texas, who say it's reduced disorderly incidents and fostered better communication about nightlife issues.
The group will begin their work in September and will observe what's going on during a few busy nights to assess what's working and what's not working.
