Connie Clulee has no plans to stop playing the piano at Timaru's St Mary's Church, just because she is 94.
Timaru’s Connie Clulee celebrates her 94th birthday on Friday but that won’t stop her playing the piano during the St Mary’s Church communion service every Sunday.
For the past more than 20 years Clulee has been playing the organ and piano for the church, learning the piano as an eight-year-old, and later learning the organ through St Mary’s.

J. Murray Gibson, dean of FAMU-FSU College of Engineering, stepping down in December to return to teaching
J. Murray Gibson, dean of the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering since July 2016, is stepping down in December.
Gibson, a tenured faculty member in mechanical engineering, will go on sabbatical during the spring 2022 semester and return to the college that fall where he will teach and conduct research.
Gibson, 67, called department chairs Tuesday afternoon to notify them of his decision and engineering faculty, staff and students were told by email. Alumni were being notified Wednesday morning.
Under Gibson’s leadership, the joint college moved up 51 points in rankings last year and is now the second highest ranked engineering school in Florida, according to US News and World Report.

FSU researchers develop battery component with plant compounds
A Florida State University research team has developed a way to use a material found in plants to help create safer batteries.
Using the organic polymer lignin — a compound in the cell walls of plants that makes them rigid — the team was able to create battery electrolytes. Their research was published as the cover article in the journal Macromolecular Rapid Communications.
Hoyong Chung, an assistant professor of chemical and biomedical engineering in the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering is the study’s corresponding author.
Other members of the research team are: Daniel Hallinan Jr., FAMU-FSU College of Engineering associate professor and co-corresponding author; former graduate student Hailing Liu; and former graduate assistant Logan Mulderrig.

Eggs, bacon, cereal, and muffins with coffee were the food of choice for watching this morning’s Historically Black College and University (HBCU) Engineering Dean Recognition Awards.
During the two-hour digital ceremony, it was a treat to see past winners of the Black Engineer of the Year Award (BEYA) make presentations to scientists and engineers leading innovation with incredible inventions, patents, and product development. Engineering deans from the 15 ABET-accredited engineering schools also spoke about their artificial intelligence, machine learning, and quantum computing research.
