123 years on, Tilak’s trust reopens coffers meant to combat diseases
Vijay ChavanVijay Chavan / Updated: Apr 22, 2020, 06:00 IST
Since a century, Rs 25L funds were lying untouched as the members wanted to use them
to respond to a pandemic
In Pune, 1897 was the year of plague. Its intensity was so that almost a person from each family fell prey to the disease, following which half the population deserted the city. Those who stayed back shunned corpses that were later thrown into wells by the British officers, who could not undertake the final rites due to lack of funds.
This was when Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, who had become a national figure, stepped in and along with other revolutionaries, to form Samshan Fund Committee. This panel was stocked with equipment required for final rites as it also embodied the religious beliefs. The fund received a generous feedback so much so that it ran successfully till 1910. With no work left afterwards, the trust remained a mere registered body, until today — 123 years later — when it was revived in response to the

MUMBAI — Protests persist in India months after the government passed a new citizenship law. The law has been challenged in the streets as discriminating against Muslims by allowing immigrants of every major South Asian religion but Islam to seek asylum in the country. In defense of secularism, millions have waved copies of the Indian Constitution, raised posters of Mahatma Gandhi, and held up other symbols of country’s successful struggle against colonial oppression.

Jamia Millia Shooting: Making of a Hindutva Terrorist
A look at the toxic social media circle inhabited by the young man who shot at a crowd gathered to mark the 72nd anniversary of Gandhi’s assassination.
February 03, 2020
The shooting at Jamia Millia Islamia on January 30 highlights a worrisome trend in India at a time of high political and religious polarization. A 17-year-old, still a minor according to Indian law, was motivated to pick up a loaded weapon and attack a crowd in the presence of a platoon of police officers.
A section of the mainstream media, known to pander government propaganda in the name of journalism, called him a “protester” and right-wing websites like OpIndia, whose partisanship has been called out by the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN), claimed he was planted to stage the attack. Another section of the mainstream media is debating whether he should be called a “Hindu terrorist.”

Will Narendra Modi's government posthumously honour Vinayak Damodar Savarkar (1883-1966) with the Bharat Ratna? Most likely, even though his name did not figure in the Padma awards announced on the eve of Republic Day. After all, the BJP, which has evolved into a Savarkarite party - the Hindu Mahasabha in its new avatar - is insistent that its greatest, albeit highly controversial, Hindutva icon be recognised as a "Jewel of India".
If President Ramnath Kovind accepts the government's recommendation in this regard - his predecessor Dr K.R. Narayanan had not acceded to a similar recommendation by the Vajpayee government in 2003 - it would be a loathsome stigma on the reputation of the nation's highest civilian award. This is because the needle of suspicion forever points at Savarkar's involvement in the conspiracy to assassinate Mahatma Gandhi, although he was acquitted for want of corroborative evidence.

The assassination of Bapu, January 30
Back to the history of Assassination Day:
Mahatma Gandhi reached Delhi September 9, 1947, from Calcutta. Gandhiji usually spent the whole day here talking to people, spinning his charkha and taking his midday rest.
January 30, 1948, dawned like any other day. No one knew what was going to happen in the evening. All went about the daily routine with no thought about what the day had in store for everyone. Godse considered Gandhi to have been too co-operative to Muslims during the Partition of India in the year 1947.
Gandhi had reached the top of the steps leading to the raised lawn behind Birla House where he had been conducting prayer meetings every evening. As Gandhi started to walk towards the stage, Godse also stepped out from the crowd next to Gandhi’s path, and fired three bullets into Gandhi’s chest and abdomen at point-blank range.

In 1944, while Gandhi was staying at Panchgani, in Maharashtra, a group of around 25 young men staged a protest against his policies. Another protest was organised against Gandhi while he stayed in the sweepers’ colony in Delhi. Both the protests were carried out by the same men under the leadership of Narayan Dattatraya Apte.
A Brahmin from Pune, Narayan Apte was the son of Dattatreya Apte, a respected scholar and historian. Narayan earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Bombay University in 1932. After three years of unemployment, he was taken in as a tutor in Mission High School in Ahmednagar. He aspired to become a master in the field of education.

At a time when an enraged India is demanding "capital punishment" for those who raped and murdered a 25-year-old veterinarian near Hyderabad, a new book retells the stories of 11 high-profile criminal cases that culminated in a death sentence.
"Hang till Death", written by advocate Prateek Jain, delves deeper into the history of death penalty in India before taking the readers through detailed accounts of convicts and the crimes they committed to face the harshest punishment.
It begins with the 1948 case of Nathuram Vinayak Godse, who assassinated Mahatma Gandhi, along with co-conspirator Narayan Apte, and covers all the cases till the most recent one on Yakub Abdul Razak Memon, who was executed by hanging on 30 July, 2015 in Nagpur jail for his involvement in the 1993 Bombay bombings.

Bhopal, Nov 19 : The Hindu Mahasabha on Tuesday sought to reignite the Nathuram Godse bushfire by inviting Netaji Subhas Chandra Boses "grand niece" Rajyashree Choudhury to glorify him and run down the Father of the Nation at Gwalior.
Three days after the Gwalior Police booked some Mahasabha activists for distributing offending pamphlets about Mahatma Gandhi and for performing 'aarti' of Godse and his co-conspirator Narayan Apte at the Mahasabha office, Choudhury appeared on the scene to say Gandhi's role in the freedom struggle was like that of "Bhishma" in the Mahabharata, one of the two major Sanskrit epics of ancient India, who condoned immoral behaviour of Kauravas.

  Sat, Nov 16 2019 07:46:43 AM
MP Gwalior, Nov 16 (IANS): The Hindu Mahasabha stirred up the controversy over Nathuram Godse yet again by worshipping him on his "70th sacrifice day" on Friday.
The Mahasabha submitted a memorandum to the administration demanding to include in the school curriculum Godse's statement submitted in the court during his trial for Mahatma Gandhi's assassination. The organisation also demanded to return the statue of Godse, seized by the BJP government in the state two years ago.
Incidentally, the other issue that has triggered another controversy on a related subject is about the Bhopal MP, Sadhvi Pragya Thakur's conspicuous absence from the padayatra to mark the 150th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
