COVAX is our best chance to beat COVID-19

Editor’s note: Oyeronke Oyebanji is a public-health professional and a 2021 Aspen New Voices Fellow, Strategy Coordinator at the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations and a member of the COVAX Strategy Coordination Office. The article reflects the author’s opinions and not necessarily the views of CGTN.
The first vaccine deliveries by the COVID-19 Vaccine Global Access (COVAX) facility to Ghana, Nigeria, and Côte d’Ivoire brought a glimmer of hope to African countries keen to start immunizing their populations against the disease. But while COVAX is ramping up deliveries, its mission to provide rapid, fair, and equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines to people everywhere is being threatened by rich countries ordering more than they need. This worrying global imbalance in vaccine distribution could hold back Africa’s recovery and prolong the pandemic worldwide.

Nigeria Needs to Better Protect its Schoolchildren

at the Aspen Institute, is a lawyer, peacebuilding practitioner, and development expert based in Port Harcourt, Nigeria.
In early March, over three hundred schoolgirls abducted by armed groups from a secondary school in Zamfara State in northern Nigeria were released by their abductors. Unfortunately, the global outrage this incident stoked has not deterred the armed groups operating in the north. Just last week, another set of students was kidnapped from a college in Kaduna State—the third mass kidnapping of students in Nigeria in 2021. An ugly video released by the kidnappers in Kaduna showed the students being brutalized by their abductors. Nigeria clearly needs to do more to protect its children. The country’s future depends on it.

OPINION | Vaccine misinformation: What to do when it's coming from leaders

The African Alliance filed a complaint against South Africa’s Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng because he publicly made false statements about Covid-19 vaccines.
Most people’s views about vaccines aren’t set in stone, and research shows they can be swayed in favour of jabs with factual information.
Most South Africans are pro-vaccine. Survey results vary but between 61% and 67% say they would take a
Covid
-19 vaccine.
What is the best way to fight misinformation about Covid-19 vaccines (of which there has been plenty in South Africa) spread by leaders?
Attacking them directly by correcting their myths or scepticism with scientific information, is simply not the answer, research shows. Rather, we should focus on the people they’re trying to reach and expose the techniques influential people use to distribute the wrong information.
