Good luck finding a bigger smile this season at Isotopes Park than the one worn regularly by Connor Joe.
Between the smile, the high-energy approach to the game, the cavernous dimple on his left cheek and that flowing hair fighting its way out of the back of his helmet when he’s at the plate, the 26-year-old San Diego native who has bounced back and forth a few times this season between the Colorado Rockies and Albuquerque Isotopes pretty much personifies fun.

Colorado Rockies news: The weaknesses are glaring, but what are the strengths of the Rockies?

There are a lot of things that are wrong with the Colorado Rockies and their near-NL-worst record of 18-29 represents that. From an inconsistent offense to a bullpen prone to imploding and the inability to manufacture runs on the road, there are only a few teams in the league with this kind of unique ability to find so many ways to lose games. But what does this team do right? What are its strengths? Are there any?
There are. When you look past all the losses, there’s a few things this team has going.
Speed
This is an aspect of the team that I think often gets taken for granted. The Rockies have some of the best speed in the league with guys like Trevor Story, Garrett Hampson, Raimel Tapia and Yonathan Daza. As a team, they have stolen 27 bases which is sixth-most in the majors. The four mentioned above have combined to score 85 of the team’s 218 total runs. They’ve only been caught stealing seven times this year so there’s an argument to be made that the Rockies could use some more aggressiveness on the basepaths to get more runners in scoring position. This could be especially important since the Rockies are only slugging .398.

The Oklahoma City Dodgers sure looked a lot like that big-league version that won the 2020 World Series.
And it wasn’t so much because they had a pair of Los Angeles Dodgers making injury rehab starts near the top of the lineup, including former National League Rookie of the Year and two time All-Star Cody Bellinger.
Albuquerque actually fared well against him with Bellinger hitting in the two-hole and his big-league teammate, Zach McKinstry, in the three-hole Friday night in front of an announced crowd of 4,641 at Isotopes Park.
It was the heavy bats of the rest of the lineup, especially catcher Keibert Ruiz, who hit a pair of home runs and had five RBIs, that looked like a big-league squad in a 13-3 Dodgers win over the host Isotopes to even the six-game series at a win apiece.

Friday: Ben Ruta’s RBI double highlighted a four-run second inning and host El Paso held on to hand the Isotopes a 6-3 defeat at Southwest University Park.
The Chihuahuas led 5-1 after six innings but Sam Hilliard’s RBI groundout in the seventh and Nick Longhi’s run-scoring single in the eighth trimmed the margin to 5-3. Longhi extended his hitting streak to a team-best six games.
But in spite of out-hitting El Paso for a second straight night, the ‘Topes could get no closer and have dropped the first two games of the six-game series. Starting pitcher Ryan Castellani was 2-for-2 at the plate with a double but took the loss on the mound.

The Rockies’ el cangrejo, Raimel Tapia, is having a great season. After hitting for a career high .321 BA in his last year’s short 184 at-bat season, Tapia has followed up by now hitting a similar .314 in 121 at-bats. And so far this season he’s had a team high eight multi-hit games and is currently on a nine game hitting streak. I think it’s safe to label Tapia as a professional hitter. It’s not just that he’s gotten all these hits, it’s how he’s doing it.

Colorado Rockies positional battles: How will the outfield play out?

With names like Charlie Blackmon, Raimel Tapia, Garrett Hampson, and Sam Hilliard, the Rockies 2021 outfield feels the same as it has been for the last few years. But at the same time, it’s also different. David Dahl, a 2019 All-Star outfielder who could play all three spots, started in 57 percent of Rockies games in 2019 and 35 percent in 2020. His injuries and salary were too much for the Rockies, so he’s a Texas Ranger now. Kevin Pillar, who got the majority of the starts in center field in 2020, is gone too. Ian Desmond is opting out for the second straight year, and with the Rockies having a team option for a $2 million buyout for the final year of his contract in 2022, Desmond’s time with the Rockies is likely done.
