New Talks Could Help Iraq Find Room to Stabilize Amid Crises

As Iraq’s government struggles to build stability in the face of economic decline, COVID, political protest and periodic violence, it may see new hope for some maneuvering room in its narrow political space between the United States and Iran. One day after U.S. and Iranian officials agreed through intermediaries to work toward restoring the 2015 accord over Iran’s nuclear program, American and Iraqi diplomats announced an intent to remove U.S. combat forces from Iraq. Both initiatives face deep uncertainties. But if successful they could widen Iraq’s difficult path toward peace.

GE said it has reached a financial close with Iraqi Ministry of Finance (MOF) and its financial partners for the Power Up Plan 4 (PUP4).

The financial close - a critical milestone that marks the final step of a loan agreement becoming effective - will see GE provide capital and spare parts, repairs and services to the Qudus, Khairat, Baghdad South, Hilla, Mussayab, Haidariya and Karbala power plants to help maintain more reliable generation of up to 2.7 gigawatts (GW) of electricity for the Iraqi people.

As part of these efforts, 20 gas turbines that are currently not operational at these sites will also be returned to service.

Book review: The Handshake by Ella Al-Shamahi

See all pages
It may be one of the most ancient human gestures, but in the past year the “handshake has become taboo”, said Stephen Bayley in The Spectator. Covid-19 has transformed it into a “lethal bio-weapon” – with some, including the US president’s chief medical adviser, suggesting it should be eradicated. Ella Al-Shamahi begs to differ: the anthropologist’s new book is a “cheerful, witty and well-researched” history of the handshake, which also “looks forward to its return”.
Al-Shamahi attributes her passion for the handshake to being prohibited from using it during her strict Muslim upbringing, said Jake Kerridge in The Daily Telegraph. As an adult, she came to cherish the fact that the handshake facilitates an “easy bond between all humans” (as evidenced above with Richard Nixon and Elvis), enabling strangers to experience a degree of tactile intimacy while maintaining propriety and respect. I found her enthusiasm infectious: “having not particularly missed shaking hands over the past year, I ended this very engaging little book so desperate to get started again that I’m in danger of becoming a super-spreader”.

Pope Francis visited Iraq at a time locals fear ISIS' resurgence

Pope Francis, the chief of the Roman Catholic church, visited Iraq in a historic visit last week. In a meeting oozing symbolism, the pope met Ayatollah Sistani, the religious leader of Iraqi Shias. He also visited the ancient city of Ur, which is the birthplace of Prophet Abraham, the patriarch of monotheistic religions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. On the last day of his three-day sojourn, he addressed a congregation at a church in Mosul, a city that served as ISIS’s capital in Iraq.
“How cruel it is that this country, the cradle of civilisation, should have been afflicted by so barbarous a blow,” the Pope said, “with ancient places of worship destroyed and many thousands of people—Muslims, Christians, Yazidis, and others—forcibly displaced or killed.”

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Preparations are underway for Baghdad to repatriate 500 families, the Iraqi parents of which are suspected of affiliation to the Islamic State, three years after initial plans to transfer them stalled, said a spokesperson for the Kurdish-led self-administration in northeastern Syria after meeting with an Iraqi delegation on the matter.
“They reached an agreement that 500 Iraqi families from al-Hol Camp be repatriated back to their country in multiple phases,” Luqman Ahmi said in an interview with Kurdistan 24 on Wednesday.

The United States committed Wednesday to move all remaining combat forces from Iraq, although the two sides did not set a timeline in what would be the second withdrawal since the 2003 invasion.
The first "strategic dialogue" with Iraq under US President Joe Biden's administration comes as Iranian-linked Shiite paramilitary groups fire rockets nearly daily at bases with foreign troops in hopes of forcing a US exit.
