ARUN SANKAR/AFP via Getty Images A months-long clash between India and China on their Himalaya border has dramatically increased tensions. But the growing rivalry between the two Asian powers is also likely to play out in the Indian Ocean. China's navy is capable and only getting bigger, and India is trying to catch up. Last year, an all-out brawl between Chinese and Indian troops along the disputed Sino-Indian border killed 20 Indian and at least four Chinese soldiers. The medieval-style battle in the Himalayas showed that the countries' rivalry is entering a new phase of intensity. "China is definitely factoring larger and larger in India's defense strategy today," Timothy Heath, a senior international and defense researcher at the Rand Corporation think tank, told Insider.
There is North Agalega, an island controlled by Mauritius, India's long-standing ally. This is where India is building its base. It might seem like the middle of nowhere, but look around and it will make perfect sense. To the south is the Reunion island, controlled by the French, another close ally, and to the north is Djibouti, China's foothold in Africa where they have a military base. So the Indian base serves two objectives. The first is to coordinate with allies and in fact, this is already happening as India recently conducted joint patrols with French vessels from the Reunion.
How Indiaâs Military Base On Mauritiusâ Agalega Island, Shrouded In Secrecy, Is Taking Shape by Prakhar Gupta - Mar 6, 2021 06:34 AM North Agalega Island in the south-west Indian Ocean. Snapshot Six years after India and Mauritius signed the agreement, an Indian military base, shrouded in secrecy, is slowly taking shape on Agalega island. In 2015, during Prime Minister Narendra Modiâs visit to Mauritius, India had signed an agreement with the remote Indian Ocean island nation for âsetting up and upgradation of infrastructureâ â a euphemism for a military base â in the countryâs Agalega archipelago. The plan was to build a runway in the middle of the island to facilitate the operations of B737-900 and Airbus 321 type of aircraft, a port near the existing jetty and structures to house communications and intelligence installations, including a transponder system to identify ships as friend or foe.
