Sobre el origen del Día de los Abuelos en México existen varias versiones. Algunas de éstas señalan que el festejo fue instituido en el gobierno de Abelardo Díaz Rodríguez, entre 1932-1934, y posteriormente ratificado en el gobierno de Lázaro Cárdenas.
